I hate to disagree with prior reviewer Peter Durward Harris of Great Britain, whose writing I have followed since I got on the computer in the summer of 2001. We have similar tastes, considering that I am a Yankee, and have reviewed the same music many times. However, this Ewan MacColl CD only gave me sporadic pleasure. The first time I listened, I only liked six of the 20 tracks...the uptempo ones, the ones with the most accompaniment, the most familiar songs. The second play, I found I liked four more, 50 percent of the disc. I have been a folk fan for 45 years, and I am as Anglo-Saxon as any NJ-born guy could ever be. I heard ABOUT Ewan MacColl ever since the very early '60's, but never actually heard much BY him. I knew he wrote the ubiquitous ... Read More:

Michael Hurley is a genius! If anyone can capture that old-timey feeling in a whiskey jar and pour it into a modern context, it's old " Doc Snock" There are " Snockophiles" everywhere who have known this for a long time now: Hurley is who Dylan always wanted to be ,but couldn't, because he just couldn't cut the muster. Enjoy! By the way, he needs the money.

An excellent introduction to the Battlefield Band, one of if not the premier Scottish folk groups. You can't go wrong here. And for those Irish folk music fans out there who might be put off by a previous reviewers claim that there is a vast difference between the two folk traditions, please give this album a try. You'll find much that you will like. To begin with, the various incarnations of the Battlefield Band have included Irish players and singers (Pat Kilbride comes to mind), and have included many Irish tunes and songs. Scottish and Irish music, owing to deep geographical, cultural, and historical ties, have always cross pollinated each other. There is an enormous body of song and melody, usually under variant titles, that both cultures hold in common. ... Read More:

RICHARD FARIÑA was another great poet, but whose life ended early as the result of a motorcycle accident. Nonetheless he and his partner/wife Mimi Baez (sister of Joan Baez) created one of the great albums of the "beat" and new folk movement, REFLECTIONS IN A CRYSTAL WIND. Songs on it such as Children of Darkness and Raven Girl metaphorically describe the personal torment and social destruction are relevant as much today as during the Vietnam Era when first released. Richard and Mimi's duets are flawlessly in synch. First-rate musicians accompany on most songs. The youth today might actually relate to the sensitive musical and political substance on this CD from our history.

This is a collection of songs played live on the Mountain Stage radio show. Most of the songs here are the blues, but there are other styles represented. My personal favorite is the acappella version of "Purple Haze" by the Bobs.

I attended a concert with this group a few years ago. We were packed in like sardines and just about raised the roof. They're wonderful performers, and this album is one of the best.

In the great swirl that was the folk music revival movement of the early 1960's a number of new voices were heard that created their own folk expression and were not as dependent on the traditional works of collective political struggle or social commentary associated with the likes of the Weavers, Pete Seeger or Woody Guthrie. Although Eric Andersen was a product of the intense Cambridge folk scene and knew and played with many of the stars of that scene he had a distinctive niche in that he performed mainly his own his music and his subject matter tended toward the very personal. It was only political in the most general sense that he, like the others, was breaking away from Tin Pan Alley to express his sentiments.

After receiving my CD of "Bowling Green" from England by way of Switzerland, I played it a few times, not more than fifty. The ethereal blending of voices by Ellen and Irene plus the rollicking banjo work of Erik Darling are among the best auditory experiences a human can have. I am also fortunate to have the latest CD by the Kossoys, "Hop on Pretty Girls." If you can find a copy, consider yourself twice blessed. These two ladies are a national treasure.

A quick little story: I once met Ian Tyson at a hotel restaurant in Taos, New Mexico, where a sculptor who knew him introduced me. Tyson was having his dinner, so my friend and I only spoke with him very briefly. Mr. Tyson was in town to do a show at that hotel's ballroom a little later that same evening, and of course, we had tickets. During the course of our very brief conversation I couldn't help but gush about some of my favorite music that he and his former wife and musical partner had created so many years earlier. I mentioned how much I loved all of the Vanguard albums, but that the first one I had ever heard had been the later MGM record, THE LOVIN' SOUND. Mr. Tyson's face visibly drooped. We moved on; later, my friend explained that this was Tyson's ... Read More:

This is a great folk-music CD. It is actually a live concert, recorded just a few years ago. Unlike so many "reunion" concerts, these acts feature the original voices and arrangements, and it sounds great! It's amazing that these people are performing 40 years after the songs were popular, and they still sound terrific! Even the Smothers Brothers repeat their unique humor... I had forgotten how wonderfully crazy they were! This is a very enjoyable trip down memory lane.
