Ian & Sylvia hit their stride on their second LP, which features the first in a line of talented second guitarists (John Herald) they would use to augment their original guitar-autoharp-basslineup. The album featured an assortment of largely traditional material that was unsurpassed in its time, encompassing bluegrass, spirituals, gospel, hillbilly, the French-Canadian standard "V'La L'bon Vent," a British prison song, and two tunes from the Cecil Sharp collection of Southern mountain folk songs of British origin. Two of the most impressive cuts, however, were contemporary compositions. One was their version of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time," one of the first obscure Dylan tunes to be committed to vinyl. The title cut, an Ian Tyson ... Read More:

If you have the slightest interest in folk music, and aren't familiar with Ramblin' Jack, you got some serious homework to do. Ramblin' Jack is the true successor to Woody Guthrie, not Bob Dylan as many have suggested. This CD is chock full of beautiful ballads and twangy tunes, and it has the most impressive yodal in recorded history. I love this album, and I thank my lucky stars that a good friend turned me onto it. Each song transports me to another time and place, and that's cool. Ya dig? If you're thinking of pickin' this CD up, take a cue from Nike and "just do it". You'll be glad you did. Peace.

I love the Brothers Four and this cd was a great addition to my other Bros. 4 cds. My dad was surprised to see I have it and he's asked me to get him one as well, which I will.

I tend to approach "legendary albums" with a grain of salt. I was only vaguely aware of Bob Gibson until recently, even though I grew up on Peter Paul & Mary and the Kingston Trio. Anyway, I was reading his autobiography (Bob Gibson: I Come for to Sing: The Stops Along the Way of a Folk Music Legend) which is quite unusual, but very interesting, and it piqued my interest. So I got the CD even though my expectations weren't too high. The first time I listened to it, it reminded me a lot of The Kingston Trio at the Hungry i. They seemed similar--very much a product of their times. Fun to listen to, high energy, etc.
When I listened again, and listened more closely to the harmonies, my jaw just dropped. In most music, and especially ... Read More:

Josh White's Free and Equal Blues is a wonderful album, full of personal and political stories. Just the liner notes about Mr. White's life are worth the price of the CD, but the songs are truly glorious. Some are funny, and some are heartbreaking, but all of them are sung with great feeling and a gorgeous, smooth voice. It's been said that some of his songs are predecessors to rap music. Whether that's true or not, Josh White's music is a real treat, even after more than 60 years. Get it!

If you have to listen to any music, this is the collection to listen to. It covers all the basic beginnings of American Music and leaves you with a want for more. You will have all the tracks memorized and will be playing the CD even after the machine is shut-off. The CD shows the incredible range of American music. This is the BEST.

Jean and Jim Glover were notable for their friendship with the great anti-war folksinger Phil Ochs. They reportedly introduce Ochs to his wife and they covered seven of his songs on their three albums. They were married and stopped working together after their marriage ended. Jim Glover is still around, living in Florida and very active in the peace movement and still performing anti-war songs.
People World was a minor hit of the late sixties. The beautiful orchestration on the tune was unusual for the time and still sounds great. It is interesting and captivating. The combination of Phil Ochs' Rhythms of Revolution with Hang on Sloopy, Like A Rolling Stone, and Guantanamera is brilliant. Changes was not quite as interesting as People ... Read More:

Read More:

I saw Pete three times in the 1960's, all after this album was recorded, and all were primarily "adult audience" shows at the height of the fervor over civil rights. However, no Seeger concert went on without a kids' song or three, and when I picked this CD up in a bargain bin the other day, it brought back fond memories of watching him sing "Here's to Chesire, Here's to Cheese" and "Abiyoyo" live. His joy in performing was infectious, and he never let the audience off the hook if the song could be enhanced by their participation. Still, the songs mainly belong to a fading era, as Pete himself tells this NYC audience of children, in which "Families had to make their own music, and make up their own stories to entertain themselves." I have four grandchildren, ages ... Read More:
