LIVE at the hungry i

CD-Charts > Music > Revival
by: Glenn Yarbrough

Release Date January 01, 1997
In "A Study in Scarlet", Sherlock Holmes reminds Dr. Watson of Darwin's claim that the power of producing and appreciating music existed among the human race before the power of speech was arrived at. "Perhaps that is why we are so subtly influenced by it," Holmes goes on to say. "There are vague memories in our souls of those misty centuries when the world was in its childhood". This Glenn Yarborough arrangement might serve as proof of such a proposition.

Now Yarborough's fine tenor and winning personality stand on their own - but perhaps not as well as they once blended with the voices and personalities of Lou Gottlieb and Alex Hassilev as part of the Limeliters.

There's nothing wrong with this fine set of recordings ... Read More:

Bowling Green

CD-Charts > Music > Revival
by: The Kossoy Sisters & Erik Darling

Release Date October 14, 1997
After receiving my CD of "Bowling Green" from England by way of Switzerland, I played it a few times, not more than fifty. The ethereal blending of voices by Ellen and Irene plus the rollicking banjo work of Erik Darling are among the best auditory experiences a human can have. I am also fortunate to have the latest CD by the Kossoys, "Hop on Pretty Girls." If you can find a copy, consider yourself twice blessed. These two ladies are a national treasure.

CD-Charts Music : Bob Gibson & Bob Camp at the Gate of Horn

Bob Gibson & Bob Camp at the Gate of Horn

CD-Charts > Music > Revival
by: Bob Gibson & Bob Camp

Release Date March 12, 2002
I tend to approach "legendary albums" with a grain of salt. I was only vaguely aware of Bob Gibson until recently, even though I grew up on Peter Paul & Mary and the Kingston Trio. Anyway, I was reading his autobiography (Bob Gibson: I Come for to Sing: The Stops Along the Way of a Folk Music Legend) which is quite unusual, but very interesting, and it piqued my interest. So I got the CD even though my expectations weren't too high. The first time I listened to it, it reminded me a lot of The Kingston Trio at the Hungry i. They seemed similar--very much a product of their times. Fun to listen to, high energy, etc.

When I listened again, and listened more closely to the harmonies, my jaw just dropped. In most music, and especially ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Revival
by: Donovan

Release Date February 15, 2005
This is Donovan's debut album in the UK and it was released on May 14th, just four days after Donovan turned nineteen, so the songs were all recorded when Don was just a Scottish lad. This is a folk type record with Donovan accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica. Though many people of the day were heralding Donovan as the British Dylan, his music is really quite different. True he does play the harmonica, but Donovan has a melodic voice that Dylan, and most anyone else for that matter, could ever equal. "Josie" is one of my all time favorite Donovan songs. I heard him sing it when I was sixteen at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, California and was really blown away. "Remember the Alamo" not written by Don leaves a lot to be desired lyricwise in ... Read More:

by: The Limeliters

Release Date January 28, 1993
The Limeliters were one of the more successful folk groups of the early 1960s, especially in terms of representing the movement's backlash against rock 'n' roll. In the beginning the group, which took its name from the Limelite club in Aspen, Colorado, consisted of Glenn Yarbrough on guitar, Lou Gottlieb on bass, and Alex Hassilev on guitar and banjo. Gottlieb had been a member of the Gateway Singers and heard Yarbrough and Hassilev singing one night at Hollywood's Cosmo Alley nightclub. In 1959 a successful gig at San Francisco's hungry i got them a record contract and the rest was history.

What made the Limeliters stand out was the beautiful blend of the three voices, more so than any contemporary folk group. You had Yarbrough's pure and soaring ... Read More:

Wrap the Green Flag: Favorites of the Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem

CD-Charts > Music > Revival
by: The Clancy Brothers

Release Date February 22, 1994
This is a great CD for someone looking to introduce themselves to Irish Music. However, for the more hardcore Clancy and Makem fans, this disc offers little in the way of new material. There are a few rare versions of songs that you can't get anywhere else (Rising of the Moon-45 RPM Version?, Valley of Knockanure, Johnson's Motor Car), but most have been released on other CD's or record albums. I wish that Columbia would just rerelease some of the classic WHOLE albums on CD, instead of waisting our time on repackaged items. Overall, a good buy, but don't expect anything new.

by: Anne Briggs

Release Date October 16, 2006
This is how I like to hear the old, traditional songs sung.
Simple and unadorned as they were sung in homes and
at gatherings long ago. Haunting stories about real life
that bring us close to times past.
Lovely - I'm so glad it was released. If you like this you may
like Kathy & Carol. Two old souls from across the pond,
who sang in the same haunting, and pure way as Anne Briggs.

The Slide Guitar: Bottles, Knives, & Steel, Vol. 1

by: Various Artists

Release Date March 01, 2008
Eternal thanks to Thomas Edison for inventing recording when he did because, had it been delayed for many more years, much of what you hear in this magnificent 1990 release from Sony/Columbia, which presents artists ranging from legends to the virtually unknown, may well have been just a dim memory.

Those that fall into the legend category are immediately recognizable, led by the master of the 12-string guitar (he could also play the accordion and concertina, violin, piano, mandolin, and harp or harmonica) Huddie William Ledbetter, better known as Lead Belly (or Leadbelly as he is sometimes listed). Born in January, 1888, he left behind an extensive catalogue of Folk standards when he died on December 6, 1949, including this previously-lost version of Packin' ... Read More:

I attended a concert with this group a few years ago. We were packed in like sardines and just about raised the roof. They're wonderful performers, and this album is one of the best.
