If you have a collection that includes more than 3 albums by any artist, then i have an album that is not to be missed by ANYONE. The album "Folk Is The New Black" the artist Janis Ian. Ms. Ian has been around the music block for the last 40 + years and has used every one of those years to perfect her craft...as a Fan, i say here craft was perfect 40 years ago...as someone looking at this album as something new and fresh i say, it will catch you off guard, tapping your foot, going back and listening again to that guitar part you were sure you could believe. Janis Ian has always been an artist who makes people think and feel deeply, on this album she includes making you laugh...but most of all, she makes you want more.

This is how I like to hear the old, traditional songs sung.
Simple and unadorned as they were sung in homes and
at gatherings long ago. Haunting stories about real life
that bring us close to times past.
Lovely - I'm so glad it was released. If you like this you may
like Kathy & Carol. Two old souls from across the pond,
who sang in the same haunting, and pure way as Anne Briggs.

`Joan Baez in Concert Parts 1 and 2' may have been the very first Joan Baez albums I heard, back in 1963, just a few months after having gotten my spiffy new portable record player for my small bedroom, and at least a year before I took to the Beatles and at least three years before I took to Bob Dylan.
It is entirely appropriate that Joan did these live albums so early in her career, as there is just something very right about hearing folksongs, both old and new in the presence of a live audience, as that is easily the most important point of folksongs, before they were mutated into the singer / songwriter product.
As the performances are so simple and the only real job of the soundman is to faithfully pick up Ms. Baez' ... Read More:

When I got a new MP3 player recently, I went through about 5000 MP3s on my hard disk, just picking out my favorite songs from each artist/album to go on the player, but when I got to Chad Mitchell Trio, *ALL* of their songs from all their (pre-John Denver) albums went on.
Some of their songs are funny, some are rousing, and some are just beautiful melodies with those great CMT harmonies. There is not a song in the bunch that I don't enjoy listening to. And "At The Bitter End" is possibly their best album. But you can't go wrong buying them all.

Who would have thought that three young white boys from the North Country could sing and play Delta blues and not sound like either a feeble imitation or a parody? This album is a masterful achievement for guys who were so young when it was first recorded, and didn't have the benefit of any first-hand contact with bluesmen as they grew up. After all, Tony Joe White and Mose Allison, two premier white guys who "sing black", for example, were born and raised in the same milieu where the blues originated.
I don't agree with a previous reviewer who alluded to "earnest white guys trying very, very hard to sound black." Dave Ray managed to bury his Minnesota accent completely, and he didn't make it sound like a struggle. Koerner's singing doesn't come ... Read More:

The Chad Mitchell Trio had a number of solid albums, but this, along with At the Bitter End are the best, is brilliant. It really showcases their fabulous harmonies and charisma. Very cool.
