It's hard to imagine that anything could be better than the original Folkways box set (Volumes 1-3), but this album is. Everything I love about V1-3, there is even more of here. The eerie juxtaposition of darkness and jubilation pretty much sums up the whole 20th Century in an hour and a half. Yes, it's short and pricey, but better in my mind to preserve Smith's original vision - after all, he scuttled the original release of this album in order to stay true to that vision.

You know if Johnny did't exist you would have to think he was a work of fiction cooked up in some promoters mind in the late 60's high powered Blues Boom. Johnny was certainly in the ritht place at the right time. The man was the real deal with a depth of talent rarely seen...and he was well versed in a lot of music styles besides the blues and thats what sets JW apart from the crowd--besides being a 6' albino from Texas. All in all this is a great collection of songs from an American Treasure..He dam well should be!!

There are very few CD's that I would classify as "mandatory", but this is one of them. If you are new to blues, this is a perfect CD for your collection. Whether you're 8 or 80, this disc contains the most absolutely beautiful music you've ever heard. At low volume, you've got intelligent, elegant background music (that will make your dinner guests think you're more sophisticated than you are!). If you crank it up, you can experience the full texture of fluid guitar playing and all of the complexity that blues has to offer. In short, I would describe "Spotlight on Lucille" as the "Dark Side of the Moon" of blues music.
If you're a blues afficionado and don't already have this in your collection, then shame on you! Get it, enjoy it, and enjoy it again!

I've listened to quite a few blues players and Buddy Guy is the most energetic and uptempo player I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. This cd ROCKS! Plain and simple. In particular: Cut You Loose, What Kind of Woman, Now You're Gone, Cheaper To Keep Her, and Somebody's Sleeping In My Bed are all above average tracks and will have you playing this album for years to come. A must own for any Blues/Rock fan. Kudos to Buddy Guy for cutting such a rocking album!

This is an excellent record, probably the best from Champion Jack Dupree. I would hesitate to call it a pure blues record, since many of the tracks do not qualify as blues (e.g. Frankie & Johnny, Stack O Lee) but the mixture is well chosen. His version of "TB Blues" is the best I have heard since Big Joe Williams. If you break down the tracks into components, they may not appear sensational: the musicians are OK, but not sensational, Dupree's voice is OK, but not sensational, etc. but here everything works out and the shortcomings are barely noticeable. They probably recorded what they had at the time, which was not much (only 10 tracks) and the record is on the short side for modern CD's. Nontheless: it can be stronly recommended.
