Adrenaline and Around The Fur may have been good albums, but White Pony is where the Deftones really crawl deeper into their sound, and digging up New Wave musical influences like The Smiths and The Cure. All the while, they manage to stay very heavy, as singer Chino Moreno channels his inner Morrissey and croons heartfully in between his guttural screams.
While songs like "Elite" and "Korea" tread over familiar moshing territory, the band really shines when they go beyond the familiar Nu-Metal sound. "Feiticeira," with its infectious snare work and walls of distortion, is kept melodic by the vocals. Slower, more progressive tracks like "Change," "Rx Queen," and "Digital Bath" are hypnotic, and you can't help but just float with ... Read More:

A bit more of a stereotypical rap album than the group's later work, which is probably why I didn't like it much the first time I heard it. I'm not a fan of stereotypical G-Funk, see, and that's all I heard in it the first time through. God, was I wrong. It's deeper than that, even though it's not fully immersed in the "alternative" thing yet. So even the more "playa-business" oriented tracks - "Ain't No Thang," "Myintrotoletuknow," "Call of Da Wild," "Claimin' True," "Crumblin' Erb," "D.E.E.P." - has OutKast's trademark dark, quirky, layered production. And the classic songs kick as much butt as the best of OutKast's later albums do. The title track is a condensed Isaac Hayes epic with hip-hop beats; breakthrough hit "Player's Ball" has a great ... Anyone who listens to the radio should remember hearing "Country Grammar", "E.I.", "Ride Wit' Me", and "Batter Up" on any given station when Nelly first debuted in 2000. He created quite a buzz when he first came out because he was a rapper but he wasn't talking about killing you, stealing from you or anything of that nature. He rapped about lighter subjects like sitting next to Vanna White on airplanes, getting paid off of country grammar and hanging with his friends, The Saint Lunatics.
"Country Grammar" is a decent album, but the only song that truly impressed me was "Ride Wit' Me." There are some other mentionable moments, but that's definitely one of his finest tracks to date. "Ride Wit' Me" has an amazing beat and melody. ... Read More:

Satellite is a well-executed alternative metal wonder. It's loaded with loud, hard rock songs that can match anything on the radio today (Set It Off, Boom, Satellite, The Messenjah, etc.), and it also has quieter songs that are just as effective (Youth of the Nation, Thinking About Forever, Ghetto). P.O.D. are of course going to receive criticism for being Christian rock and not being "true" metal, but they make great music regardless. This truly is the sound of a hard-working band at their peak.

Filled with lyrical fire and blazing production! Not 1, not 2, but THREE monster singles (Change the Game, Give it to Me, This Cant be Life), some nice guesting from the R.O.C. roster, A hot track with 'Face...AND...the intro of Freeway! What more can we ask for?
'Guilty...Innocent' was a taste of what SHOULD HAVE been with Kels'...but oh well. :-)

A few weeks ago I knew almost nothing about House of Pain. What I did know was Everlast, now a trashy blues singer, and DJ Lethal, who embarassingly ended up with Limp Bizkit, were members, and that wasn't encouraging. I figured they were ranked barely above Vanilla Ice in the realm of pre-Eminem white rappers. Then one day my roommate was playing a song I really liked, which never happens. It had that early 90s sound I love and the beat seemed to be the work of DJ Muggs, one of my favorite producers. I was surprised to learn it was House of Pain's "Jump Around," and I immediately did my research and then ordered this album.
What I got was a decent CD, not bad, not great. Everlast isn't a terrible rapper but he's not that good, either. ... Read More:

One of the best albums I own. Maybe THE BEST! An essential lesson in Doom/Stoner metal. Sounds like it was influenced by Ozzy-era Black Sabbath and Trouble. The sum of the parts (Pepper Keenan, Phil Anselmo) is greater than their previous bands (C.O.C, Pantera). Super Heavy, but bluesy and melodic. Even the lighter songs (Stone the Crow) are heavy, and the other trippy stuff (Jail) is great too. Will not dissapoint.

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five are essential in the rap world. Starting out with 'party raps' like Freedom and Happy Birthday, they set the whole rap world on edge and made everybody else take notice with the release of The Message. This is an overview of their work. So, if you're just getting started, this is a good place to start.
