i am not embarrassed to say i am one of grateful dead's biggest and long time fans. all things considered, this may be their best album. it shows the group as they really were; beyond belief, and a complete mess , sometimes in the same song. the 'beyond' parts make the experience more than worth the sloppiness and there are some chill inducing beyondo highs here. you dead lovers know what i mean. this is the album i always thought [hoped] they would release, but i believe they got cold feat, and scrubbed them up best they could. but we all knew better. for instance, when the dead would start a song that was special [i know; very subjective] like st stephen, the crowd would go nuts on that first note, but on other albums, what do you know, no ... Jefferson Airplane always had a little bite to their "We Can Be Together" politics. Living at the epicenter of hippie culture in San Francisco as they were, it's hard to duck the flowers and beads when talking about their musical aesthetic -- sort of Haight-Ashbury's answer to the guitar sounds the Velvet Underground was making, plus a heady dose of electric and country blues, plus 3 and sometimes 4 way vocals, plus incendiary musical change-ups that hinted at sprawling psychedelic vistas.

The Dead have a great energy for this show, and the songs which were new at the time are well-played, especially 'Bird Song' and 'Loser.' Somehow though, even as a longtime Deadhead, I can't get past the fact that neither Pigpen nor Weir can stay in tune much of the time when singing. Weir does a nice job on songs where the band plays quietly, like Dark Hollow (which is excellent here), but he not only sings off-key on 'Playin' in the Band,' but he misses his cue to start singing about three different times. And Pigpen's rave on Good Lovin' is downright embarrassing and much too long. But Pigs' harmonica blowing is sweet, and he does do a very good job in both 'Hurts Me Too' and 'Easy Wind.' I have the first two Moody Blues albums in the new 2008 remastered format so far. "In Search Of The Lost Chord" is the most psychedelic of all Moody releases. The new remaster sounds really crisp and clean. The drums sound especially good, compared to previous cd issues, on which they have a muddy sound. Ray's flute sounds brilliant with all the other exotic instruments on this album. There is a certain warmth that is missing on this re-issue. I have read about the use of a "quad" version for these remasters, but the 1997 remasters, to me, hardly beat the first cd issues of these classics from the beginning of the cd era. Rhino Records does it again. This 4 C.D. box set captures the San Fransisco, West Coast Sound of the mid to late sixties. If you lived in the Bay Area at that time, I highly recommend this box set. I was living in Hawaii at the time and i remember a lot of these tunes, which i haven't heard since that time. I feel that they could have added another disc of the really commercial stuff that we are all familiar with, but i guess with licensing problems and such. The folks who will appreciate this set the most will be the baby boomers. You know the sole suvivors of that great time in music.

Blood Sweat and Tears was the brainchild of Al Kooper who started as a session man early in the 60s movement. I bought Child is Father to Man when it first was released on vinyl and literally wore it out. At the time of it's debut it was unique as a concept with it's use of a horn section and combination of instrumentation. I remember Electric Flag appearing at the same time, but I was immersed in this album. I had only heard of Kooper from his "Super Session" with Stills and Bloomfield which I also had loved so I picked up Child. Kooper had a unique honest voice and had created arrangements with this music which constituted a departure and much needed rest from what was becomming the heavy and sometimes dark feeling of the 60's. You can play me any album that opens with a 23 minute 19 second live version of Dark Star. Live/Dead hits the spot; scratches that 40-year old itch; tells it like it was back when it really was. Makes you wish you could've been there or could go back again. Well, you can at least go visit for a while when you're listening to this album.
