I am an old white guy who graduated from high school in 1972 and who was utterly enthralled with what is called "progressive rock" for a decade of my young life. At the top of a heap that included bands like Gentle Giant, Caravan, and Emerson Lake & Palmer stood Yes. It's hard to describe what they meant to me. The first record for me was the "Yes Album," and it literally changed my perspective on music. I saw the band for the first of my 23 shows over a period of more than 25 years at a Catholic high school outside of Cleveland on a Sunday afternoon. It was between the release of the "Yes Album" and "Fragile" - they were debuting songs from that record at the show. I saw the tour captured on this DVD three times.

If you don't have Styx's 1977 'The Grand Illusion' in your collection, than you are really missing out. While Styx were somewhat famous before, 'The Grand Illusion' was their breakthrough record. Songs like 'The Grand Illusion' and 'Come Sail Away' are played on classic rock radio stations all the time.

And it's not hard to see why. Styx rocked. They were a perfect blend of soft ballads (many were dedicated to Dennis DeYoung's wife, Suzanne) and hard rock tunes.

I know, so far, this isn't much of a review. But that's going to change right now.

Warning: I do not fit in with the "new age" hippie folk who bought and reviewed this album.

I got this album because I wanted something soothing to fall asleep to - this mission was accomplished, as the music is quite soothing. But, I have listened to several Halpern records and I must say, for how many albums this guy puts out, a lot of them sound the same. Yes, the genre lends itself to repetition, which is part of the soothing aspect he is going for, but cmon. I also don't subscribe to the "energy" bs that a lot of the reviewers claim to feel when listening to it. Feeling "energy" from the music is just a snobby way of saying they liked it. It did not heal you, it did not purify your soul. It sounded good and made you feel better. ok.

I was driving home from a friends house and listened to this CD that I had stuck in my console. I remember purchasing 2112 on a whim, as an LP, in 1977( freshman year in high school). I played this over and over and made a cassette recording to play in the under dash player I had mounted in my dad's car. It brought back ALOT of memories of fun times and innocence, a time when there were no cell phones, internet, computers,CD's, high def. etc. Going to second base in the back seat of your dad's car was exciting and dangerous, hiding beers in the woods and lying about whose house you were sleepng at. This was truly played over and over and over, whether it was at a friends house on the turn-table singing along and trying to match Geddy's high notes or copied to a cassette recording ... This album is Terrific, you will know most all the tunes from radio. 11 songs just enough, no filler like so many Hits albums. Lynn's arangements and textures are amazing, I never knew he was such a force in the Wilburys. Sure wish he would form a new Wilburys style band, maybe KD Lang, Nils Lofgren, Petty, Dylan & Lynne of course. Yeah Jeff give them all a call.
