Adele seemingly came out of nowhere in 2007 with comparisons to Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, and even Feist with her soul-searching songs. After touring in a supporting role for various artists in 2007, Adele released her debut album in January, 2008.

"19" (12 tracks, 44 min.) is a stunning debut, presenting songs all written or co-written by the 20 yr. old Adele. Starting with a sparse "Daydreamer" that immediately spellbinds you, the album shifts from moving track one after another. There's one thing you can count on with Madonna - there's new music always coming down the pipeline, and every CD is different. This one isn't going to be one for the ages.

Overall, it's a decent album. It's not anything revolutionary or an attempt to kick the industry in the behind, like "Confessions..." and "Ray of Light" were. But it's different from the last, in style and tempo, so she's holding true to form.

"4 Minutes" didn't seem to get as much top 40 fanfare as I thought and that might have been a sign that the entire album isn't going to be well received. "Give it to me" is the follow-up which hasn't had much, if any, airplay.

I'm intrigued. I have put myself into the position of responsibility to purchase a wide range of music that I might not otherwise be familiar with, and Kala is just such a purchase.

Quite honestly, I love her accent, and I love her quirky sense of style and artistic chaos. And that translates to the music. The irony being that the music is so "happy" and up-beat, and contrary to the opinion of another (obviously rhythmically challenged) reviewer, it is incredibly dance-able. In fact, if you do not move, then you either detest the music, or you have no sense of rhythm.

Brian Wilson is a man with a large reputation to live up to-- to be fair, taking the next step for the guy who wrote, arranged and produced arguably the greatest album of his generation (the incomparable Pet Sounds) must have been exceedingly difficult, and with resistance from the band, it took 37 years for its followup, the magnificent SMiLE, to surface. Only three real good songs on this record, but we`ve heard them all before. This is nothing new, the entire record is kind of a Motown soul replica, and could have been made back in the early 70`s.

Amy has a cool voice though, and the lyrics aren`t too bad, but the production quality is so unimaginably crappy you couldn`t believe it. The bass are boomy, there are distortions in Amy`s voice, and the arrangements all over are poor and monotonous. Therefore it gets more and more boring to listen to this record after a while. The production crew should have been punished for this.. Better luck next time!
