Here I am in Albert Lea, Minnesota, my hometown. I love Minnesota when I don't HAVE to be here, but that's not the case just now. I'm bored, so I rumble through the FM and then the AM stations on my cousin's radio, and what do I hear? Generic pop, lots of conventional studio country music, an Irish medley on the PBS, and other products of musical globalization but not one station playing "old time". The extinction of local music, and by implication local musicians, is one of the "environmental" tragedies of our times, not much different from the extinction of endemic songbirds in Hawaii. My cousin tells me there are still a few polka bands playing on weekends around the state, mostly for fun. I hope so.

This collection of big band covers and swinging classics done in the big band style is a mixed bag. The main reason is that 7 of the songs were recorded by the studio band of George Cates and His Orchestra for an album in the 60s....considering Cates was Welk's musical director and arranger, the lines tend to blur as far as appropriate credit goes, but Hot Toddy, Caravan, Christopher Columbus, Music Makers, Organ Grinders Swing, Mr Ghost Goes To Town, and Concerto in B Flat Minor are arranged and recorded by George Cates. They have merit in the swinging alto sax and trumpet solos. I was very skeptical - trying a CD without hearing it first. This has been my best polka CD purchase to date. It takes me back to my grandparents' (God bless them) homes a few decades ago. The music is crisp, clear and performed in the best Slovenian-style you can get. Our whole family, elementary-aged children included (!) HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this CD! There is not a song we all don't just love (though my personal favorites are 1, 2, 4, 5 and 19). ORDER it and be ready to ENJOY!
