This is one of those "various artists" CDs formed by stringing snatches of old recordings together. One track, supposedly a medley, seems to have been created by splicing two Frankie Yankovic tapes from the 1950s. I remember that track from a... vinyl LP, by unidentified artists, from about 1970. It's not all that bad, though. At least the recording quality is decent. And "Little Green Men Polka" has some funny lyrics and a catchy tune.

I have several LP's of The Magic Organ, and this CD contains selections from many of them. Beautiful performances, very airy and light sound. Especially enjoyable are PENNY ARCADE and other Jerry Smith originals. A little Griffin-like, but distinctive and up-to-date in sound. No, it's not Virgil Fox at the Crystal Cathedral, but it's bouncy and bright.

He always includes a cajun number or two, in this case Cajun Fiddle, and a country track, this time Big Ball's in Cowtown. He's so prolific that, on track 12, he tells he Can't Afford to Be a Star. I hope that's not true, Jimmy.

This CD features what might be called elevator polka music. It would be good Muzak in an office full of polka lovers. An electronic organ by itself just doesn't cut it, even though today's instruments are a far cry from those played in the 50s by Ken Griffin. A real bass fiddle should replace the organ pedals, with perhaps a trumpet and some vocals added as well. Listening to any of these tracks reminds me of the "real" versions I have heard by other artists, even when there have been several "real" versions which have not reminded me of each other. Better choices would be CDs by Frankie Yankovic, Jimmy Sturr, or Joey Miskulin, or by Fred Ziwich and the International Sound Machine (you'll have to browse by the ... Read More:

I bought the original 4 record set of this music over 35 years ago! It has been a tradition to play the music while decorating the tree. I made cassette copies for my daughter when she moved away on her own----even to England. She has kept up the tradition to this day. We were concerned about the longevity of cassettes, so were SO anxious to see if this 'wunnerful' music was available on CD. Imagine my extreme thrill to find it on your website!! I ordered this and another CD for her and myself. Now we can be assured of listening to his fantastic music for many years to come. What memories flood back!! No one plays Christmas music like Lawrence Welk! THANK YOU for making this available.
