Until recently, Walter Ostanek's only readily available CD was 35th Anniversary. Now, ten more have been re-released. This one was so good, I think I'll order some more. The full title is "25 More Polka Greats", but I'm pretty sure I received the same CD I ordered -- there's no version without "more" in the title. The CD was probably originally two vinyl LPs, because only the first twelve tracks are in stereo. The rest are monophonic, which is greatly preferable to fake stereo, an awful device used by some re-releasers. Get this for the nostalgia, or for the quality. You have to like music for its own sake, though, as few of the tracks have lyrics.

A thoroughly enjoyable CD for any music lover, this is a fantastic collection of leftovers and extras, some released, some appearing for the first time. The twenty tracks range from traditional Mexican ballads ("Sombras Nada Mas") to Tex-Mex ("Besos Besitos") to classical (Strauss' "Tales From the Vienna Woods") to polkas, cha chas, rock/pop, Japanese Ondo, and the just plain strange (Tiny Tim interpreting the Beatles' "Girl" and Japanese Ondo Kikusuimaru singing "Volare"). This being said, this is all great music, fun stuff, fun to dance to, sing along with, and just listen to, even at work, although your coworkers will look at you real funneh-like.

I was for a while looking for a good recording of the most famous Lumbye galops, marches and polkas. And thought Rozdestvenski was it - he is after all a fairly renowned conductor. However, I am much disappointed.

The galops sound stiff and boring, the polkas are danced as with crutches, the music is overall poorly paced. All the notes are clearly in place but the conductor doesn't seem to care about thi music at all. I cannot believe that anybody who is first acquianted with Lumbye through this recording would ever want to return to him again. The 'Strauss of the North' denomination must sound terribly exaggerated.
