Within hours of moving into my new home, I began to set up my stereo equipment. I had a hankerin' for some aural lunar travel that could only be quenched by Joe Meek's unbelievably unique and perfect recordings found on the "I Hear a New World" CD. I remember the first time I heard "Magnetic Fields". I was sitting up in bed with my headphones connected to my laptop. After about 18% download progress, I hit "Preview" to sample what was to come. All I could hear was odd noises, clicks, hisses and pops. "Could this be a corrupted mp3," I asked myself. I gave it a few more minutes as the hijacked wifi signal went from "Low" to "Very Low" strength. I was now at 35%. I gave it another "Preview". Then, about one minute into the cacophonic sci-fi journey, ... Read More:

Read and performed by veteran actor William Roberts, Billy Budd, Sailor is the unabridged audiobook presentation of Herman Melvilles maritme classic of a sailor "pressed" into service on the HMS Indomitable during the Napoleonic Wars. Despite his popularity among the crew, Billy experiences ruthless treatment from the ship's master-at-arms, and so follows horrible tragedy. A compelling and vivacious rendition, Billy Bud, Sailor is a recommended addition to personal and community library audiobook collections. 3 CDs, 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Rza returns (for half the album) to his bobby steels / rzarector persona on this album and it is about time. Rza takes the listener through a semi autobiographical journey. The album starts out with a young bobby partying and selling drugs without much care for the future or wisdom. Eventually his drug dealer gets him to read a book (not sure what book this is, anyone know?) and bobby changes his outlook on life and becomes spiritual. He changes his name to Prince Rakeem (his first alias). The second half of the album is filled with conscious bangers and is a glimpse into his self hyped masterpiece "The Cure". Rza constantly drops science in the last few tracks and if those songs are a preview to the cure (as I read in an interview with RZA) I am very ... Read More:

I have known about His Royal Hipness, Lord Buckley, since I lived in Greenwich Village lo these many long years ago. This is a cat that was hip before there even was hip. In fact I believe all the beat poets and beatniks and, later, hippies, learned how to speak by hearing this cat wail. It is a shame that this is a studio recording and not a live gig. That is where he was his most amazing. He would get into raps that kept climbing and climbing until you thought that he could not get any higher, and then goof on that. I have always loved him, and I always will. Just like 'Bird- Buckley lives!

When Rykodisc released their excellent Kerouac tribute CD, Kicks Joy Darkness many people felt that they would be hard pressed to top that album. Well, we were wrong; they have indeed topped it, and with a CD of rare material by Jack Kerouac himself.
The stand-out item on this set has got to be Jack's thirty minute reading of the "Jazz of the Beat Generation" section from On the Road. Although Kerouac recorded extracts from his most famous book almost fifty years ago, none were ever released and the tapes were thought to be lost. A complete On the Road album was planned at the time, but never materialized, and there has long been a search for the recordings that Jack made at his Verve session in the last week of February 1958. During that week in ... Read More:

When I first seen the cover of this cd I thought it was going to be some Timothy Leary type of project. Upon listening to I was releived to see that Burroughs hasn't changed his style he just added a background score.
Personally I thought the music for the most part enhanced the readings and that in a way it reminded me how far removed he is from this type of music and yet he still managed to make it work. Words of advice for young people alone is worth the price of admission.
It seems odd to me that he even managed to live this long with such a lifestyle. I think if he had been given more exposure as a spoken word artist he could have greatly expanded his audience and more people would see the humor in his books.
Overall I recommend this cd there ... Read More:

This is a wonderful CD featuring King's speeches. Yes, I do wish there are more however, you can still feel King's fire and strength inside these speeches!!!!!!!. Although I was only 3 at the time of the Mountaintop speech, I felt like I had lost my father all over again. This had moved me to tears and now I really know what my dad and others like him was fighting for!!!!!!

Anthony Banks' fourth album "Big Thangs" to me is a solid LP. Like many reviewers say, this sounds like more of a compilation than a regular album. On this here, Ant Banks just produces every track, and he does a good job for the most part. The funky production still inhabits here just many other songs here he has produced, but they are no where near as awesome as Get in Where You Fit In or The Big [...] (which were classics in my opinion), but it's still a good job. The guests on here range from garbage to great. Also most of the guests on here are from northern California, colaborating from many estabolished artists from southern California, which is also great since I'm a huge fan of west coast rap music.
The good songs here are actually on the first half of ... Read More:

Depending on how much you like voice impressions, this could either be great for you or could be irritating. Speaking as a standup conoisseur, I'll say that Frank Caliendo doesn't do a whole lot of "standup comedy" in the usual sense of jokes; he does voices as the title of the CD implies. Me, I love voice impressions, I think Caliendo is very talented and much of this CD is very funny, but a few of his bits on this just miss the mark entirely.
For example, I realize this came out in 2002, but he slips into almost the exact same Adam Sandler "piece of pie" reference probably 10 times throughout the album. Furthermore, his Mike Myers/Dr. Evil hasn't aged well, his Chris Farley is tired (I'd say he needs to avoid SNL actor impressions entirely), and frankly his Al Pacino ... Read More:
