I can offer little in the way of literary criticism that has not been expounded by scholars about Joyce's masterpiece. What I can offer is the viewpoint of an 'average' reader.
My edition was the 1922 text, and it was prefaced by the original publisher with a simple disclaimer: "The publisher asks the reader's indulgence for typographical errors unavoidable in the exceptional circumstances." And it certainly is understandable and necessary: the text is rife with punctuation, spelling and word issues - but it is nearly impossible to tell which are deliberate and which came courtesy of the type setter.
The structure itself is almost more of a literary experiment than a novel. It switches presentations, from interior monologue ... Read More:

Don't get me wrong. I attended 3 readings by Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky at Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusettes in the late 1970's and even recorded "Contest of the Bards" and handed him a copy of it at his request,... I 'absolutely' consider his oratory style of delivery and poetic verse and style amazing and brilliant and so very very entertaining and inspiring.. but the 'greatest' epic poem or poet of his century I just can't agree with. Gary Snyder made such an impact with introducing the marriage of Zen and the Orient into modern poetry style of his day (as Vincent vanGogh and Gauguin did in painting in the Expressionest era in painting/art), and Gary's poems of the passing of a day's events are so brilliant and open and revealing, and Jack ... Warren G. is one of the most consistant and underrated producers of the West Coast. On his third album, his production comes into form on many songs, and shows why he is such a talented producer. All of his beats have that West Coast vibe that you can just sit back and chill to. I first got into Warren with the video "I Want It All" with Mack 10, back in late '99/early '00, which made me a fan of his music.
On this album, Warren accomplishes two obsticales:
A. Leaving Def Jam was probably the smartest thing that has happened in his carrer, because their lack of promotion for artists on the west side, there would have been an album that he made would not have seen the light of day.
B. Warren colabing with artists on the East ... Read More:

"If I were to give a prize for the single best idea anybody ever had, I'd give it to Darwin for the idea of natural selection, ahead of Newton, ahead of Einstein, because his idea unites the two most disparate features of our universe: the world of purposelessness, meaningless matter and motion on the one side and the world of meaning and purpose and design on the other."
The above quotation is found at the beginning of this fascinating docudrama that traces the genius, torment, and secrets of Charles Darwin (1809 to 1882) beginning after the time he came back from a trip to islands that sparked his thinking. It documents how he developed his theory and why his theory is so relevant in today's society as well as the future. Through astounding ... Read More:

I am a big enough fan of the Guys With Eyes to not just drool like a puppy with its bell rung when there is a new recording to devour, but to listen and look critically, to see from where they have come and where they are going, to see if their output furthers their art, or if it falls complacently back on previous endeavor.
Unfortunately, I find this recording to be very much of the last sentiment.
The Residents have a long-established discography of pure brilliance, so it is not surprising to find the occasional dull attempt, but this one in particular bothers me in several different directions. For one, this is a second recent attempt at narrative, the other being Tweedles!, but both seem to very much spring from the poor effort that was God in Three ... Read More:

There isn't a child who grew up in this country who hasn't been influenced, in one way or another, by the poems and short stories of Edgar Allan Poe. Or writer or producer or musician, for that matter, it seems. If we have one thing in common, one little shared bit of ourselves, it may be a love (or at least respect) of Poe - his irony, his forboding sense of things not really the way they seem, his ability to look not only into the eyes of us all, but into our dreams, our nightmares, our inner, hidden secrets. That was his talent.
Musical producer Hal Willner knows it. The beat poet Allen Ginsberg once told him in passing, "Everything leads to Poe." And seeming to follow that lead, Willner ushers everyone and everything he can think of into his project - "Closed On Acount ... Read More:

This is a wonderful release from the magnificent Gil Scott Heron, Brian Jackson collaboration. These guys have created a new level of excellence in the soul/funk/jazz genre that is hard to surpass. I love the live version of The Bottle, it gives so much more grunt than the studio version. 17th Street live makes you wanna holler and clap your hands, even when driving, so it can be dangerous. Timeless - all rappers, you owe these guys!
