This is a good CD if you need some Eddie in your life. However, being a die-hard fan of Eddie's since his SNL days, I was disappointed to discover the first track is not the entire "Barbeque" bit that was on the "Comedian" album ("Delirious" VHS). It was chopped off and only contained Uncle Gus setting Charlie on fire, "Roll Charlie around, he'll be alright." Then it fades off into track 2, the rest of the "Barbeque" bit ("Goony-Goo-Goo" "Your wife is a big foot, isn't she Gus?") which is titled, "Drinking Fathers." Huh? This is the way it should have been: the first track should have been "The Barbeque" in its entirety, then track 2 should have been the actual "Drinking Fathers" which was released on Eddie's very first CD. I'm suprised not to see anyone mention Rosemary Edmonds' translation of this masterful work. Her translation, published by Penguin Classics, is really quite good, and reads smoothly, and it seems accurate to what Tolstoy would have considered his message. I highly recommend this translation of War and Peace.

Let me start by saying that I'm a big Soul Coughing fan. I just love the sound those guys put together, and the hep-cat poetry is awesome. Even though they have been defunct for years now, they remain one of my favorite bands.
So, I finally broke down and bought some of Doughty's solo stuff. After reading reviews on all his solo albums, it seemed to me that this one was the most well-received. So, I figured I'd give it a try. I have to say... I'm really not impressed with either of these discs.

I was so happy to hear of a new project from Ram Dass, so I ordered an early copy. So glad I did...I love listening to it while doing yoga, or just hanging out and dancing around with my little son.

Hearing the wisdom of Ram Dass' spoken words reminds me of his simple teachings, without feeling like I'm listening to a self help book on tape! I'm intrigued enough to want to learn more about his teachings, and have been checking it out at ramdass.org

Don't get me wrong. I attended 3 readings by Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky at Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusettes in the late 1970's and even recorded "Contest of the Bards" and handed him a copy of it at his request,... I 'absolutely' consider his oratory style of delivery and poetic verse and style amazing and brilliant and so very very entertaining and inspiring.. but the 'greatest' epic poem or poet of his century I just can't agree with. Gary Snyder made such an impact with introducing the marriage of Zen and the Orient into modern poetry style of his day (as Vincent vanGogh and Gauguin did in painting in the Expressionest era in painting/art), and Gary's poems of the passing of a day's events are so brilliant and open and revealing, and Jack Kerouac's ... I entertain my minivan-bound children with books on tape/CD. The best are the Harry Potter series. There are many other good ones. And this is a good non-fiction title for children.

Kids need heroes, and this tape provides my 5 and 7 year old boys with some impressive ones. The heroes come from the worlds of politics, science, literature, religion... This tape is one of my 7 year old son's favorites. It has a very positive message for him. He gets ideas of what he could be.

Volume 2 (the one I have) tells the stories of some historical figures, emphasizing all the positive and heroic qualities of each: Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Ludwig van Beethoven, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, Mahatma Gandhi, and George Washington.

My goodness, so much complaining! I originally found this collection on cassette for less than five bucks and would have paid much more for this treasure. Think of it as "the portable King", and be grateful that you can be fully enlightened even by fragments heard between getting gas and buying groceries! I'm afraid it's easy to get jaded in this ironically sound-byte driven era of MP3s &"more for less money" and miss the point -- this man of God offered more "meat" in 30 seconds than most people do now with 30 minutes of blather. Especially in a time when many don't know of King's name as more than cause for a day off of work or school, a gathering of these "nuggets" might just begin to get their attention, so they can then seek more.
