This CD contains a wonderfully nostalgic collection of 25 songs that I remember from my early childhood. Several of the songs stimulated strong memories of my parents. My only disappointment is in the audio quality. Several of the songs are noticeably sibilant, marked by "splattering" of "s" sounds. The price is a bargain, however, and I'm happy I bought this CD.

The totally amazing James Edward "Jimmy" Yancey was an amateur pianist who recorded the most outrageously beautiful blues ever played on a piano by anyone. His rock steady grooves and rolling tempos never quit, and he's also able to slow things down to poignant laments of unsurpassed feeling and beauty. This music really needs to be heard, and Yancey's influence on many modern jazz players - whether it's direct or indirect - ought to be recognized. Listen to Yancey and think of Monk; you're definitely in for a surprise.

This CD/album is one I have had as a 33rpm vinyl record for many years--bought it new when it first came out.Sooo......, was tickled pink when I saw it in CD format. The songs are vintage Ray Charles and include the string/large orchestra that he made several albums w/ in the 70's. Brings these old tunes to life as really no one else could.

Dr. John, Allen Toussaint and others cite 'Fess as the original funky piano player. Some say he invented funky music. Pedigree notwithstanding, this collection will satisfy the New Orleans music collector or anyone who is moved by pounding, funky piano. The combinations of keyboard riffs and vocal leaps will leave you scratching your head sometimes (why there? or at all) but he makes it all work like there was no other way to play it. An absolute original, he continues to inspire. These tracks are very hard to find elsewhere.

While there was a renaissance of interest in swing in the 1990s, and while much of this was among a relatively younger --late 20s, 30s, 40s-- audience, swing CDs are increasingly out of print.
Decca and Brunswick recorded many important swing artists in the 1930s and 1940s, the period of focus in this collection.
We are fortunate that GRP has assembled a wide variety of performers on this collection. You have hot swing performers; and you also have more laid back performers such as Glen Gray's Casa Loma Orchestra.
The music on this collection swings! --Even the Glen Miller track is up-beat.

Not just Satie, but Art Tatum: she had a similar genius for absorbing multiple disparate musical traditions and synthesizing them into a revelatory blues. Gorgeous.

A perfect introduction to now-forgotten period of music, when women were the first blues stars, this CD is also great company for a book "Black Pearls:Blues Queens of the 1920's" by Daphne Duvall Harrison. While in the book we could find historical and economical background that shaped women like Bessie Smith,Ma Rainey and Ida Cox,on this CD we can hear their voices - through the limitations of primitive recording equipment, spirit of Mamie Smith explodes in our ears from 1920.when her hit "Crazy Blues" started avalanche of blues recordings and opened a door for a new market,as then unknown teritory of "race music" whose first pioneers were women. It's interesting to compare this women to their white sisters from the same era (check "Flappers,Vamps ...
