by: Marcia Ball

Release Date June 20, 1989
I heard from Marcia on a Blues webcast.I bought 3 of her albums including her Live Down the Road. It was mainly based on a single review on the album page." Great sax on the many solos".. That sax man is awful. Bad notes, phrasing, and amature style. Gator rhythms was not what I expected either. Marcia is a terrific talent we saw in Bay St Louis some time back before the town was blown away. These Albums miss the mark. sorry.

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Otis Spann

Release Date March 01, 1989
The liner notes indicate that this was originally intended to be a Volume 2 follow-up to "Otis Spann Is the Blues", and was recorded at the same time with the same great sound quality. It includes Robert Lockwood, and features the singing of James Oden (St. Louis Jimmy) on five songs. James Oden has an unusual singing style, and takes some getting used to, but grows on you (listen to "Bad Condition" above). Overall this is a good album, but not quite as charming as the first album. A good alternative to this album is "Good Morning Mr. Blues", as it is in the same vein, but is strictly Spann with his piano. Another great recording.

Hit Parade 1956
This CD contains a wonderfully nostalgic collection of 25 songs that I remember from my early childhood. Several of the songs stimulated strong memories of my parents. My only disappointment is in the audio quality. Several of the songs are noticeably sibilant, marked by "splattering" of "s" sounds. The price is a bargain, however, and I'm happy I bought this CD.

Ken Burns JAZZ Collection: Count Basie

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Count Basie

Release Date November 07, 2000
If you open up the insert, which contains four pages of background notes written by pianist/arranger Brian Priestley in May 2000, one page about the Ken Burns film on jazz, and a track-by-track listing of the personnel on each, the complete title says "The Definitive Count Basie."

That's open to conjecture as there are many of the Count's big hits omitted in favour of some relatively obscure stuff - still very good, mind you, but not exactly among his more memorable works. The hit single, after all, was what brought home the bacon back before the days of the LP and EP and, for the most part, was what we heard on the radio.

These were any artist's most popular tunes and what made them stars, and in the case of the Count Basie ... Read More:

Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack: The Legendary Sessions, Vol. 2

A must for those who love piano music. This volume (and Volume 1) illustrate the originality of Dr. John, one of the great blues and funk piano players of the last 50 years. Other piano players in my collection include Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum, Errol Garner, Nat "King" Cole,as well as Fatha' Hines, J.P. Johnson, Fats Waller and Jelly Roll Morton. I think this album puts Dr. John in the group as a very different, very original player, and the album is extremely well recorded.

by: Ray Charles

Release Date June 10, 1997
This CD/album is one I have had as a 33rpm vinyl record for many years--bought it new when it first came out.Sooo......, was tickled pink when I saw it in CD format. The songs are vintage Ray Charles and include the string/large orchestra that he made several albums w/ in the 70's. Brings these old tunes to life as really no one else could.
