I was staying at a tiny bed and breakfast in Cape Town when I heard this CD. I asked who it was and the owner said - oh my father-in-law loves him and so does my husband - as if that was answer enough and handed me the cover. I wrote it down and the very first time I got near a computer ordered it and several other Dr John's from Amazon. I have played it over and over since, straight repeat or shuffle. It is a lovely listenable delightful rendering of some great songs. The man's voice is magic - I am no expert but I know what I like and I love this.

The liner notes indicate that this was originally intended to be a Volume 2 follow-up to "Otis Spann Is the Blues", and was recorded at the same time with the same great sound quality. It includes Robert Lockwood, and features the singing of James Oden (St. Louis Jimmy) on five songs. James Oden has an unusual singing style, and takes some getting used to, but grows on you (listen to "Bad Condition" above). Overall this is a good album, but not quite as charming as the first album. A good alternative to this album is "Good Morning Mr. Blues", as it is in the same vein, but is strictly Spann with his piano. Another great recording.

For everyone who loves gifted musicians and good tracks....The association of Otis Spann and Peter Green will remain a GREAT MUSICAL moment....forever.
Listen to again and again...without moderation !

Let's face it folks, with a name like Alligator Records, they've got to be good. Two CDs exploding at the seams with blues in all of its incarnations. Real country folk blues, Cephas & Wiggins, rip-it-up bayou blues, C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, wailing harp Chicago South Side blues, James Cotton, misbehavin' mama blues, Koko Taylor, guitar god blues, Roy Buchanan, thinly veiled sexual reference blues, David Hole, and whole lot more besides. 38 tracks in all, and you probably won't care for one or two of them - but whatever your 10 favorites end up being, they will surely justify the low cost of this anthology.
I've been listening to blues for quite some time, since the days of the Taft administration actually. Even ... Read More:

Marcia is a fine singer who writes many of her own songs, though she is never afraid to record covers where they are suitable. Her albums can be almost relentlessly upbeat, as with Hot tamale baby, but this is generally a much sadder album - more like one would expect from a blues singer.
Marcia still demonstrates her Jerry Lee-ish piano playing here, on the opening Red beans, the third track Down the road and particularly on her cover of Joe Ely's Fingernails, but those are not typical of this particular album.
More typical is the title track, in which Marcia painted her house blue after her man left for good, or St Gabriel, about being sent to prison and later being released with nowhere to go.

In addition to great blues, there is the extra bonus of there being 16 tracks rather than the 10 listed on Amazon and on the CD itself. There is no information on the other 6 tracks but more blues is more blues. This is a great record (sorry for dating myself). One song after another - just sublime. Who would think that a piano player/singer and a guitar player/singer could put so much potency into their music without the usual band make-up. Every song is a killer. Otis Spann is just the greatest blues pianist ever. No one is in his league. The songs that feature just him on piano or just him on piano and vocal show how great his is. The songs that have the guitar accompanying him show that Robert Lockwood Jr. is a tremendous guitar player. Low ... Read More:

I don't have to tell anyone how great these tracks are. How does one guy get all 16 of the greatest swing musicians in the world into one band? This set has some Great surprises: Live sides, and rare alternates, like "It's The Same Old South", (a different take than the version on the vinyl "Superchief")
I have several of these on the ARC/Columbia family of labels (Vocallion, Brunswick, Okey, etc.) both 78s and Lps. and have been trying and failing to replace them with decent CD copies. COLUMBIA FINNALLY GOT IT RIGHT!. This set is a pleasure, and for once, it sounds great! You will NEVER be dissapointed with this purchace.
Now if Columbia would refund everybody's money for the unlistenable versions of these tunes they issued on ... Read More:
