This is truly a classic of that old time spiritual gospel we all grew up on. Every time I hear anything by Dr. Thomas Dorsey, it takes me back to my childhood and going to church with my grandmama in Alabama... a MUST have CD!

This box of New Orleans music is the essence of the mossy City that Care Forgot. Each song reveals a particular characteristic of the city and her distinctive sound; quirky, high-spirited and strong. Wish amazon did oyster poor boys.

I owned the SA-CD Version and liked that a lot, especially the surround sound. But the Monster Version does this much better.
And you'll have a bouns track, too. And some MP3 versions. And an iPod versions. And ... even the price is lower.

I don't have to tell anyone how great these tracks are. How does one guy get all 16 of the greatest swing musicians in the world into one band? This set has some Great surprises: Live sides, and rare alternates, like "It's The Same Old South", (a different take than the version on the vinyl "Superchief")
I have several of these on the ARC/Columbia family of labels (Vocallion, Brunswick, Okey, etc.) both 78s and Lps. and have been trying and failing to replace them with decent CD copies. COLUMBIA FINNALLY GOT IT RIGHT!. This set is a pleasure, and for once, it sounds great! You will NEVER be dissapointed with this purchace.
Now if Columbia would refund everybody's money for the unlistenable versions of these tunes ... Read More:

If you are a Ray Charles fan you will love this CD set. It includes his earlier works, favorites that everyone knows and is just a great CD. My ex-husband has our set, and I ordered my own set.

Marcia is a fine singer who writes many of her own songs, though she is never afraid to record covers where they are suitable. Her albums can be almost relentlessly upbeat, as with Hot tamale baby, but this is generally a much sadder album - more like one would expect from a blues singer.
Marcia still demonstrates her Jerry Lee-ish piano playing here, on the opening Red beans, the third track Down the road and particularly on her cover of Joe Ely's Fingernails, but those are not typical of this particular album.
More typical is the title track, in which Marcia painted her house blue after her man left for good, or St Gabriel, about being sent to prison and later being released with nowhere to go.
This is a fine album that demonstrates ... Read More:

I was staying at a tiny bed and breakfast in Cape Town when I heard this CD. I asked who it was and the owner said - oh my father-in-law loves him and so does my husband - as if that was answer enough and handed me the cover. I wrote it down and the very first time I got near a computer ordered it and several other Dr John's from Amazon. I have played it over and over since, straight repeat or shuffle. It is a lovely listenable delightful rendering of some great songs. The man's voice is magic - I am no expert but I know what I like and I love this.

I love mostly all types of musice, even tho I didn't grow up in the 50's, I love the sound and beat of that generations music

The 1931 recordings of Skip James are simply among the strangest and most chilling music in recorded history. I first heard some of them as a teenager in the 1980s, after I had already listened to James' younger contemporary Robert Johnson; Johnson's music is equally spooked in terms of lyrical content, but his music at any rate always has a solid rhythmic pulse. James' music was less celebrated (perhaps because, unlike Johnson, he had lived long enough to be rediscovered in the 1960s), but in retrospect it was far more scary. Less earthy and worldly than Johnson's, it seems to float in the air, an eerie keening sound emphasised by James' unorthodox approach to rhythm and blurry falsetto voice. (Johnson, by contrast, could sound positively lewd; James doesn't sound ... Read More:
