Honeydripper's Duke's Mixture

by: Roosevelt Sykes

Release Date November 22, 2004
This is a perfect piano Blues album, featuring the talents of the great Roosevelt Sykes. There is not a weak song on this album. "Yes, Lawd", "Miss Ida B." and "Mislead Mother" are particularly enjoyable. To me, Sykes was better than all the rest; Memphis Slim, Sunnyland Slim, Eddie Boyd, etc. Do yourself a favor and pick this disc up!

I'm so impressed that someone put together an amazing collection such as this. These guys' influence on popular music is immense but undervalued. Hopefully this set will help remedy the situation. Three cheers for JSP!

Release Date February 20, 2007
I am so happy that I bought this album, Buddy guy and Memphis mix it up so very well in this classic recording. You will be hooked from the first time you listen to this. I hope I can find more material by these two together, they sound like they have been playing together for years.
Enjoy!

Cool Christmas Blues

by: Charles Brown

Release Date October 07, 1994
I love this CD! It was recommended by "June Bug" on his Saturday morning Blues Kitchen show on KKFI (a public radio station in Kansas City). I ordered it after Christmas but it still kept the spirit going through January. Lots of great bluesy tracks.

Bands That Can Boogie Woogie

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Various Artists

Release Date May 25, 2004
so says canned heat after their 40 minute rendition of the boogie in 1968...you won't hear canned heat here, but you will hear 4 cd's worth of great boogie woogie rhythm and blues going back a few more decades..most are instrumentals which is good because it shows off the talent of 8 to the bar keyboard players such as freddie slack and albert ammons.. you'll hear the big band names such as benny goodman, harry james, and tommy dorsey...and there are many tracks from the boogie woogie band of will bradley with ray mckinley...if someone asks you while listening if you have some other music, just tell them "there is no other music."

by: Dr. John

Release Date September 12, 2006
Dr. John is an artist along the lines of Frank Zappa, Neil Young, Lou Reed...each album and the era that surrounds it is unique. As such, "cherry picking" individual tracks in search of a cohesive "whole" is an exercise in futility. HOWEVER...given the 2-CD, $20 price tag (I actually paid $13.99 for my copy), it's an excellent introduction to all things Rebennack. From the swampy "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" and "Black Widow Spider" (with Mac sounding like Captain Beefheart, fronting the "Freak Out"-era Mothers of Invention) to the lighter, radio-friendly tunes like "Such A Night" and "Right Place Wrong Time," to songs that meet somewhere in the middle like "I Been Hoodood," it's an hour and fifty minute roller coaster ride through Dr. John's career, ... Release Date April 16, 1993
All kids should have this CD that makes learning to love the environment fun!

A special note for CYNDI LAUPER or THE HOOTERS fans: They sing the eponymous track with as much zydeco style and substance as they can muster!

For more of Cyndi's work in the Zydeco genre, check out 2004's romping compilation "Creole Bred."

Rhythm & Blues Christmas

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Various Artists

Release Date September 01, 1997
This is a xmas cd that I bought over 10 years ago. This is one of two of the best xmas cds that I own. Even though all of the artist were before my time, I still enjoy this cd. I even bought one for my Mother a few years back. One more thing, track #18, "Frosty The Snowman" by "The Trailblazers" does not sound like a rhythm & blues song. That's my only complaint. (When making a backup of this CD, I omitted track #18.

Live at Tipitina's '78

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Tuts Washington

Release Date November 08, 2005
This magnificent live recording of the great New Orleans pianist Tuts Washington is a classic in every sense of the word. The music is of the highest quality; the setting - on stage at Tipitina's - is historically, culturally and historically pivotal....and,the ambience is about as funky as it is possible to get. The sound quality is far from hi-fi. Washington performs on an old, beat-up piano which is seriously out of tune, but that only adds to the atmosphere, and enhances the listening experience. In many ways, this record is far better than the "...Piano Professor" cd from Rounder, especially when the elements mentioned above are taken into consideration. Listening to this cd is like taking a giant leap into a lost period in time - which still is ... Read More:
