I've been waiting for this one to come out on CD since I got my first CD player in '89. Man it's about time. What's really made the wait difficult is that my phonograph hasn't been pluged in for over 10 years so I haven't even been able to listen to my LP either. Since I'm not much of a writer I'll just sufice it to say: If you love New Orleans Jazz, High energy piano jazz and entertaining lyrics, you'll love Mose Allison. If you love Mose Allison you've got to have this recording because I think it is one of his best!

Not long ago a couple of fellow blues cronies of mine and I were having a couple of cold ones and discussing the music that we love so much, when I posed the question: "If you could go back in time and be anyone in blues history, who would you choose to be?" The usual array of legends were the answers I received along with a couple of odd looks along with "Who is he?" when I said I would choose Alan Lomax. For those of you who don't know, Alan Lomax was the fellow who recorded scads of blues, folk and bluegrass artists for the Library Of Congress and was responsible for the first ever recordings of the immortal Woody Guthrie and Muddy Waters. The men and women he met, and at times lived with, along with the music he was witness to and recorded are ... Read More:

Old Hat Records always goes the extra mile to present incredibly rare sides from vintage 78s. The sound quality is top-notch, and the generous booklet is packed with equally rare photography, highly-informative notes and thorough documentation.
There are lots of reissues of early recordings, but all the offerings from Old Hat are head and shoulders above the rest.
Sure, the pirates of the world can probably find this material in MP3 format, but despicable thievery aside, they're missing out on the complete package. The music combined with the ample booklet is the true prize. The true value is owning this release, holding it in your hand: listening, reading, viewing the rare photos.

Absolutely sensational. It's been a very long time since I heard a record by a relatively recent performer containing so good, so pure and so well performed BLUES and WOOGIE-BLUES. Some of the themes are well known, classics, but all of them except the one that closes the record, are magnificient, reaching a very high quality level.
Nonetheless I personally find four themes -"Mother Earth", "School days", "Just to be with you" and "Big town playboy" - most impressive. (by the way, don't lose any chance you may have of listening to the wonderful original performance of "Just to be with you" by the great Muddy Waters in the album 'Unk in funk').Besides Barrelhouse, in this record you'll find the great harmonic Kim Wilson, drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and ... You cannot go wrong with the "Mountain Stage" series. It is just a matter of whether you are a fan of the various artists for each disc. The series is also good for exposing you to songs that you would, otherwise, never listen to.
The best tune is "Twighlight" by Rick Danko and Grath Hudson. It is a beautiful and emotional song. "O Marie" by Daniel Lanois is also of very high quality. "Such a Night" by Dr. John features magnificent piano playing. Richard Thompson could do no wrong and "Shoot out the Lights" is one of his better hard rockers. The Buckwheat Zydeco closer is a fitting ending and is a smoking hot rocker.
I love NRBQ but "Yes, yes, yes" is weak for a group famous for their high energy and terrific musicanship.

This is an excellent collection of blues tunes done with classic renditions. The pace is slow & easy with blues that makes you shake your head back & forth an inch at 4 a.m. when you feel low & the bottle's hitting fumes. John Lee Hooker smokes on "The Right Time," "Come on, baby, Hold my hand tight as you can, squeeze me & tell me I'm the one you love." Dinah Washington recorded "Blues for a Day" in 1945. It sounds great with this 1997 release and Washington packing each phrase with feeling, "Don't drift too far, daddy, Stick around so that you'll be near. You don't need to go out, daddy cause I got everything you need right here." The track has some luscious sax dripping wet with emotion. Blues guitarist Pee Wee Crayton cut the smoking instrumental ... Read More:

This is Winston's first album, released back in 1972, almost a decade before the seasonal-themed albums that made him famous. This album provides a glimpse into Winston's roots and influences as his piano style was influenced by Fats Waller and other rhythm and blues pianists. As such, it's not a "new age" album like his later releases.
