Prison Bound Blues

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Leroy Carr

Release Date April 19, 2004
While the less than intelligent yearn for Robert Johnson as a blues god, Robert Johnson yearned to sound like Leroy Carr and his guitar accompanyist Scrapper Blackwell who is heard on each of these sides. Carr's graceful, smooth, romantic, and witty singing and lyrics, the sweet but solid rhythm of his piano, and the way his piano talked with Blackwell's guitar thrilled the blues people and the blues audience not just for the short years they recorded before Carr drank himself to death (and perhaps the fact that his partner Blackwell's main occupation in life being a bootlegger was not a lucky one for his friend Leroy Carr), but blues players were recording and rerecording and trying to sound like Carr down to the 1970s.

City Lights

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Dr. John

Release Date July 29, 2008
A good album From Dr. john. I didn't expect much from this album considering it was out of print, and no one even mentions city lights when talking about good Dr. John albums. The good songs are the title track and the great ballad 'rain' snake eye's is also a ripping song with a solid guitar solo. I wonder if city lights counterpart 'tango palace' is going to be remastered and released next year.

American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Various Artists

Release Date August 26, 2003
"A rare collection of performances by America's premier bluesmen at the peak of their artistry" proclaims the cover of this disc, and that's no idle boast. Culled from 33 tracks on the two simultaneously released and similarly titled DVDs, these 16 tunes were performed live in German TV studios between 1962 and 1966, and thought lost until recently discovered.
Although the audio is mono, it's immaculately clean, and each instrument is clearly audible, an amazing feat for TV sound during these years.

T-Bone Walker does a mellow, jazzy "Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong", laying down one of his finest ever vocals performances. Veterans Lonnie Johnson and Sippie Wallace (both of whom were born at the tail end of the ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Fats Domino

Release Date February 21, 2005
This album rocks, plain and simple. If you like real Rock 'n' Roll then buy this British reissue of old hits. I long resisted listening to the Fat Man because I thought he was ancient, old school. But, my ignorance and prejudice deprived me of endless hours of enjoyment.

If you enjoy rock 'n' roll, like to tap your foot or feet, or wiggle your hips, then this will fulfill all your dreams and desires. And, Fat's backup band is awesome. The piano player reminds me of Jerry Lee Lewis.

God, I wish Fats was still around so I could see him perform live. What a fool I have been. Wherever you are Fats, thanks for rocking and spreading the joy. Mick Jagger is a poseur compared to you.

The Brightest Smile in Town

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Dr. John

Release Date October 02, 1989
Overall, I prefer "Dr John Plays Mac Rebennack" slightly to this set, but both are winners. On "Average Kind of Guy", Dr. John sings:

"Overworked and underpaid
Underloved and overlaid
I'm just an average kind of guy"

Killer stuff. Average, he is not. He's one of those musicians that really must be seen to be fully appreciated and for that, I recommend the New Orleans Jazz Festival. But to get back to this record, if you love piano blues and jazz, you'll love this album and be sure to check out "Plays Mac Rebennack" too.

by: Marcia Ball

Release Date August 22, 1989
This CD is a very good effort from Marcia. The songs move from mid tempo to slower but all have a very catchy groove. Marcia has an underrated voice and she sings her songs with great emotion. There are many highlights on this CD and songs that stick with me throughout the day after listening to them. They somehow "stick themselves" in your mind and repeat themselves in your mind over and over.

Another must for blues fans, an underrated one that should be added as soon as possible to your collection.

The Many Moods of Christmas (1963 RCA Victor Version) Robert Shaw Chorale and Orchestra

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Robert Shaw Chorale, Robert Shaw

Release Date June 17, 1997
My father bought this LP when I was 15 and played it on his Heath Kit stereo. It wowed us then and it still does. I set up my old record player just to play this album this Christmas and it was worth it! I've bought a ton of Christmas albums over the years, trying in vain to find something as good as this. No go. This is a BIG orchestra with a BIG string section, with a BIG sound and a BIG organ, backed up by a BIG chorus. There are four passages that still bring tears to my eyes when I turn the volume way up which I always have to do. I just play them over an over. Just magnificent! Powerful! Lots of quiet passages but Shaw knows how to sneak into full tilt. This album is the antidote to weenie Christmas records by pop stars who can't ... Read More:
