Blues Masters, Vol. 6: Blues Originals

Release Date February 16, 1993
Most of the numerous entries in Rhino's "Blues Masters" series are very good, and this one is no exception.

This 1993 volume brings together 18 classic blues songs, all of which have been covered in one form or another by other blues, blues-rock or rock n' roll artists. Bo Diddley's "I'm A Man" is the basis for Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy", Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right" was covered by Elvis Presley (as you may know!), Led Zeppelin have covered (or just stolen) several of these songs (the Muddy Waters-single "You Need Love" became "Whole Lotta Love"), and the Allman Brothers Band did a great rendition of G.L. Crockett's excellent, underexposed "It's a Man Down ... Read More:

Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Professor Longhair

Release Date November 19, 1991
This CD appears to have a factory defect. For a review of the music, see others' comments. Briefly, the CD is a wonderful companion to ROUNDER's "Houseparty New Orleans Style", which offers rareties culled from the same sessions as this CD. PROBLEM[!]: I purchased my CD from Amazon because the copy I already owned had a skip in it. In the Fats Domino Medley - during "Going To The River", there is a brief skip. Fess sings "The Rain/Rain is falling...". There was some surface damage on my CD, so I took it to a local record shop, they fixed the surface scratches, but the same skip remained. When I received my "like new" CD from Amazon, which has NO surface damage, the EXACT SAME SKIP appears. Does anyone have a "Mardi Gras In Baton Rouge" ... Read More:

Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Piano Blues

Release Date September 09, 2003
I agree that they might have come up with a more descriptive and less- misleading title for this CD which is, as it turns out, meant only as an introduction to the 5-CD box set of Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues - A Musical Journey - featuring music contained in the PBS TV series.

I should also point out that there are 20 tracks here, not the 18 shown above. From track 12 on they are listed erroneously and so I have shown the corrections here, along with the recording dates shown in the liner notes: 12] Piney Brown Blues - Big Joe Turner & Jay McShann - 1974; 13] Mission Ranch Blues - Jay McShann & Dave Brubeck - first release - recorded September 21, 2002; 14] The Ladder - Joe Turner - Feb. 25, 1975; 15] Honey Dripper - ... I love this CD! It was recommended by "June Bug" on his Saturday morning Blues Kitchen show on KKFI (a public radio station in Kansas City). I ordered it after Christmas but it still kept the spirit going through January. Lots of great bluesy tracks.

American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966

CD-Charts > Music > Piano
by: Various Artists

Release Date August 26, 2003
"A rare collection of performances by America's premier bluesmen at the peak of their artistry" proclaims the cover of this disc, and that's no idle boast. Culled from 33 tracks on the two simultaneously released and similarly titled DVDs, these 16 tunes were performed live in German TV studios between 1962 and 1966, and thought lost until recently discovered.
Although the audio is mono, it's immaculately clean, and each instrument is clearly audible, an amazing feat for TV sound during these years.

T-Bone Walker does a mellow, jazzy "Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong", laying down one of his finest ever vocals performances. Veterans Lonnie Johnson and Sippie Wallace (both of whom were born at the tail end of the 19th century, ... Read More:
