I have this entire 5 cd set with book and I can't praise it highly enough. Excellent compilation of the best jazz from the turn of the century through the 60's. I know that "The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz" sounds like some dry documentary put together by a bunch of white professors using slide rules and electron microscopes to determine what indeed is the best jazz, but don't let that fool you. This set is a joy to listen to.

You won't find that it contains only what was the most popular jazz, but you will find what was the best and most innovative. A friend loaned this disc to me as we were trying to find pre-show music for Three Wise Fools: A Comedy In Three Acts (1919) that we were producing @ Magnolia Arts Center in North Carolina. I enjoyed this disc so much that I had to get my own copy. Bennie Moten's "Prince of Wails" is an excellent track that bubbles with energy and a piano that won't quit. Other tracks from this disc offer great moments like Harry James' "Life Goes to a Party" that blares with horn and goes soft with piano and then starts to percolate again with trumpet. Count Basie's tracks here like "Lester Leaps In," "Tickle Toe," "I Left My Baby" with Jimmy Rushing's vocals & the smooth "Harvard Blues" are gorgeous pieces. George E. I've been waiting for this one to come out on CD since I got my first CD player in '89. Man it's about time. What's really made the wait difficult is that my phonograph hasn't been pluged in for over 10 years so I haven't even been able to listen to my LP either. Since I'm not much of a writer I'll just sufice it to say: If you love New Orleans Jazz, High energy piano jazz and entertaining lyrics, you'll love Mose Allison. If you love Mose Allison you've got to have this recording because I think it is one of his best!
