You'll always have a great time listening to this cd. I love Detroit's version of Stagger Lee and also the song Ella. Barrelhouse and Erwin are masters. Pine Top makes me feel like I'm hearing a rare blues sound. They are treasures each in their own right, and I recommend all of their solo cd's also. 88 hands deserves to get some national recognition as do these musicians.

This astonishing collection sounds great but I do have a gripe or two. For one, where's "Li'l Liza Jane" and for another, I would have loved to have heard a live version of Hank's Jambalaya 'cause Fats rips the song up live.
The omission of "Liza" is especially glaring since it was recorded for Imperial...
Imperfect as it is, this collection will keep you rockin' and rollin' with the Fat Man and insofar box sets go - this is a fine collection.

My first few spins of this CD were somewhat disappointing. It just did not deliver what I was expecting. Looking back, I cannot imagine precisely what that expectation was, since it now gets more play than most every other CD in my collection. It's not perfect. Some of the connections to Kansas City are a bit tenuous, the booklet is annoyingly written and very annoyingly laid out, and a couple of cuts are not indicative of either the sound or feel, in my opinion. Overall though, this is a splendid collection of some hot music from a hot time. Starting from the first cut, where we enjoy the great Bennie Moten and his Kansas City Orchestra, we are treated to some spectacular musicianship, in this case cornet playing that will knock your socks off. ... Marcia Ball is one of the countless legend of rockers who have toured the Bars across American forever. She have made a living being a bar band. The best thing about her concert is that at the end of the evening, as you walking to your car, about all you can say is "wow, that was fun." This pretty much somes her up. Her free style, top tapping, good time show, is captured here on this album. Starting with teh sone "Never like this before" and running to "Un-Uh Baby". If you are not a fan of her music, then this is a great place to start.

Not only was the late La Melle Prince (Decca Recording Artist 1969) a songstress and an international performer, she was also a songwritre as well, of which, her writing skills are portrayed here on (track #6) "Get High." Overall, this CD compilation is a jewel to have in your collection, especially if you love 1940's style ranchy jump blues music; as well as, big band jazz & blues and country music too...
Prince would always say, that her lucky number was always #7 (and my lucky #9 or an inverted #6 = #9...six degrees of separtion...humm, A. D. Burleigh) and yet we see another unusual example of this...I guess 'on the record' she was right, once more... (La Melle Prince, born January 7, 1927 Kennett, Missouri - presumed death 1991 Los ...
