I had no idea what Slack Key Guitar was until finally took the wrapper off this CD and played it. Love this CD. Very relaxing. Great backgound music-can let it play all day. Brings back the memories of our visit to Hawaii.
Release Date June 27, 2006
I listen to this when I am on Maui and I like it. It is a variety of artists so I don't get bored. Maybe I am a philistine but I think hours of nothing but slack key guitar is a little much. This runs the gamut from very old style vocalists to modern instrumentals to comedy.

Just like the other CD i bought this one to go with my daughter Luau theme birthday party and i found this music to be pretty relaxing.

The first track on this CD - The Calypsonians - introduced me to Taj Mahal and I had to find it. For those of you who have seen the movie "Six Days Seven Nights" it is the song being played (by Taj Mahal) on the island their first night.
The CD varies primarily between songs with an "island" feel to more bluesy tunes. The first 3 songs have an "island" feel, the next two moving into more of a blues tone, back to the islands, and back to the blues. The only track I'm ambivalent about is the last track, Kanikapila, which is more ska than anything else.
In searching for "The Calypsonians" I listened to alot of clips of different Taj Mahal CDs and was very pleased with the variety on this CD. Very cool, laid back music ... Read More:

Ahhh...driving down the road in Guam...windows down, fresh ocean breezes...circumventing potholes more akin to the Bermuda Triangle as you often times wondered if you'd even make it out...and then John Cruz's "Island Style" would come on the radio - some of the best memories I ever had. Good times. And this is definitely GOOD music. Best songs include: "Island Style," "Shine On," "Mama's Lil' Baby," "Kawailehua'a'alakahonua," "Sitting in Limbo" & the instrumental "Kahalo Moon." Kick back, relax and ENJOY this field trip for your auditory senses. Please Mr. Cruz...come play at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton again...we LOVE ya man!

This is Keali'i's second release. It features cover versions of Bette Midler's "Every Road Leads Back to You" and Elton John's "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from The Lion King. "Every Road Leads Back to You" is a duet with contemporary Hawaiian artist Robi Kahakalau. Keali'i's versitility, in other words how well he can sing different genres of music, comes across in "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Stay." As usual, Hawaiian songs and chants are also included. As someone wrote in "Keali'i Reichel Voice of an Angel," "Lei Hali'a is beyond stunning. It is utterly chiiiiicken skeeeeen!" I agree completely.

This is the ultimate Hawaiian "background" CD! I've had it for over ten years and I always play it when I want to really feel like I'm back in Hawaii. I bought it while I was living in Kihei, Maui because everywhere I went on the islands (from restaurants in Lahaina to shops in Paihia and all the way down to the hidden hotels of Hana) this is the CD they were playing in the background. It truly makes you feel the aloha spirit. As the previous reviewer's mentioned, every single song on this album is good. Don't expect any big Hawaiian hits like you'd hear from IZ (Israel Kamakawiwo'ole) or Willie K., this is just laid back new and traditional instrumentals. You could play this CD all day and never get tired of it!

The Makaha Sons are the best Hawai'i has to offer. Their genre is traditional Hawaiian, mostly sung in Hawaiian. Their specialty and trademark is three-part harmonies that are as smooth as silk. They have great voices individually with John Koko singing lead vocals and he plays an astounding standup bass; Jerry Koko (John's older brother) sings falsetto tenor and plays 12-string guitar and Louis "Moon" Kauakahi on 6-string guitar and the part that fills in the rest of the harmony. Their arrangements are complex and difficult with a lot of key changes that they execute flawlessly. This is one of their better CDs. The Sons have been playing music for almost 30 years with very minimal pesonnel changes. This is part of why they are so smooth. Read More:
