I had no idea I was a Marty Robbins fan. Sure, I was familiar with some of his hits like Devil Woman and A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation), but he kind of flew under the radar otherwise. I do love all genres of music so my friends laugh as I listen to jazz one minute, hip-hop the next and now Marty Robbins, sampling anything and everything to find the best. And this box set is among the best! Marty Robbins had a fantastic soulful voice, highly underrated, and this set shows his amazing versatility as he goes from old country with Smokin' Cigarettes and Drinkin' Coffee Blues, folk with Beautiful Dreamer, early rock 'n' roll with Unchained Melody to standards, such as All The Way, and he does each one perfectly! The sound quality ... Read More:

The Beamer's music defines an era. A certain time - the late 1970s; and a certain place - Hawaii. I was a student at UH-Manoa during that magical period and will never forget the sights and sounds of life in peaceful Mo'iliili near the university, with the razzle-dazzle of Waikiki just a short walk, or a 25-cent bus ride, away across the Ala Wai Canal. "Honolulu City Lights" was my favorite, though I also recall endlessly humming "Kaliponi Slack Key" (also featured in the film, "Big Wednesday," which debuted in 1978). Nowadays, living in Palau and Guam, I pass through Honolulu often on my way to/from the mainland. I still hear the Beamers, even while sitting in the Honolulu airport departure area! Talk about going "mainstream." Thankfully, ... Read More:

Prepare to open your heart and your memory box as you listen to the sweet sounds of some of Hawai'i's most beloved contemporary songs. Keola's aloha for his friends' music and golden era for revival of Hawaiian pride comes through every song. The melodies grabbed me and stayed with me for days, even as this CD stayed in my player for weeks! Suddenly, I recognized other versions of Ku'u Home o Kahalu, Sunflower, Pretty Girl playing everywhere --- bookstores, the airport, the radio. After listening, Keola's renditions are inevitably my favorites! You'll agree -- he's the master.

Just purchased Black Sand and almost really enjoyed it. The artistry is there, with Ledward displaying his fantastic slack key abilities. However each track is marred by an annoying use of electronic tremolo (possibly with reverb - sorry if inaccurate description, I'm not a sound engineer) throughout - so much so that I was completely distracted by it. Why someone thought this necessary is beyond me. The unadulterated sound would have been much preferred. Still worth buying for any Kaapana or slack key fan, but a bit of a disappointment.

This is Keali'i's second release. It features cover versions of Bette Midler's "Every Road Leads Back to You" and Elton John's "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from The Lion King. "Every Road Leads Back to You" is a duet with contemporary Hawaiian artist Robi Kahakalau. Keali'i's versitility, in other words how well he can sing different genres of music, comes across in "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Stay." As usual, Hawaiian songs and chants are also included. As someone wrote in "Keali'i Reichel Voice of an Angel," "Lei Hali'a is beyond stunning. It is utterly chiiiiicken skeeeeen!" I agree completely.

My mom has a massive collention of Hawaiian music...There were items on here that was a new rendition for her and she really enjoyed it.

Released in 1968, this album may strike some as old-fashioned, retro, or even stereotypical, especially given the resurgence in music representing actual Hawaiian culture (start with Iz if you don't know what I'm talking about). There is no chanting, no lyrics, but the CD is clearly a studio album with a full set of North American instruments to complement the ukelele and slide guitar. For better or worse, this music is exactly what a mainlander would expect to hear when watching a 60's era travelogue about the islands.
On the other hand, this CD is the BEST example of that musical genre. It's gorgeous, lush, and soothing. The musicianship is so wonderful you forget about stereotypes and simply float along despite yourself.

This CD is two very good musicians playing swinging relaxed jazz. The fact that both use the ukelele as their main instrument has nothing to do with anything. Great musicians can use any instrument, and both of these fellows are great musicians. There is love and laughter here, too. Beautiful melodies, nice chord substitutions and just a happy, swinging set. Well worth the money if you like good music. This CD also has Ohta-San's wonderful song "Song for Anna" which he plays solo. I don't think there has ever been a more beautiful song, no matter what instrument is used.
