The first track on this CD - The Calypsonians - introduced me to Taj Mahal and I had to find it. For those of you who have seen the movie "Six Days Seven Nights" it is the song being played (by Taj Mahal) on the island their first night.

The CD varies primarily between songs with an "island" feel to more bluesy tunes. The first 3 songs have an "island" feel, the next two moving into more of a blues tone, back to the islands, and back to the blues. The only track I'm ambivalent about is the last track, Kanikapila, which is more ska than anything else.

In searching for "The Calypsonians" I listened to alot of clips of different Taj Mahal CDs and was very pleased with the variety on this CD. Very cool, laid back ... Read More:

This is an absolutely gorgeous set of twelve slack-key guitar instrumentals from Cyril Pahinui, one of the true masters of the style. Cyril is one of the many musical sons of the late Gabby Pahinui, a legendary guitar player who helped put slack-key on the musical map, and who obviously passed on a wealth of talent to his family. This album is super-mellow and relaxing, but doesn't sink into sappiness or goo -- the true soul of the slack-key tradition comes through loud and clear... This collection of Hoopii recordings is so far and away superior to the two Hoopii discs issued previously on Rounder, it's almost laughable. This CD is wonderful, from the amazingly clear, delicately and sensitively restored recordings to the eye-catching graphics in the booklet. It's such a treat to have an accompanying booklet that's well-written, carefully researched and packed with photos that are never seen before. The music is a joy to listen to, of course, and I think this is an excellent item not only for Hoopii purists, but for those who are new to the music and might be searching for a proper introduction to the genre.
