Just another great gunfighter ballad record,nothing special,nothing spectacular,just great coming from that smooth,tenor,baritone voice of Marty Robbins.Hear Martys smooth natural delivery on the very short,but effective,The Wind Goes,or the tell a story of life on the range,Cry Stampede,and the fatal,Cottonwood Tree.Marty Robbins never ceases to amaze me with every listen,always painting a picture in my mind of the old west.The Drifter is not the best of the gunfighter ballads,however,a must if you own the others.

Released in 1968, this album may strike some as old-fashioned, retro, or even stereotypical, especially given the resurgence in music representing actual Hawaiian culture (start with Iz if you don't know what I'm talking about). There is no chanting, no lyrics, but the CD is clearly a studio album with a full set of North American instruments to complement the ukelele and slide guitar. For better or worse, this music is exactly what a mainlander would expect to hear when watching a 60's era travelogue about the islands.
On the other hand, this CD is the BEST example of that musical genre. It's gorgeous, lush, and soothing. The musicianship is so wonderful you forget about stereotypes and simply float along despite yourself.

This CD is my favorite. Listen for that low base note. This CD is strangely soothing and makes me long to visit Hawaii. Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu has a beautiful voice, he is the real deal.

I've been a huge Jack Johnson fan since the beginning, and I'm always trying to find new artists that give off that same kind of "Live Easy" vibe. Well Kalai isn't trying to be Jack Johnson, but you still get that same happy feeling that you get with all of Johnson's stuff. This is the perfect soundtrack to a lazy day on a beach, or a good country road trip. If you wanna know how good it gets, listen to "On My Mind," one of my favorite songs ever.

Absolutely one of the best put out by The Makaha Sons and Bruddh Iz, together or separately. The music, arrangements, audio are excellent. If you're a fan of Makaha or Iz, this has got to go into your collection. The last song on this CD is even better than the original by Crosby, Stills, & Nash.

Hapa sure didn't miss a beat with this album either. Having grown up in Hawai'i, I was excited to find Hapa's debut album at a local CD shop here on the east coast, and fell in love with it. When I returned home on vacation a few years later, of course, I *had* to pick up their subsequent work. It doesn't disappoint. I also gave a copy to a buddy of mine as a Christmas gift, and he loves it even though he's never even been to the Aloha State.

Barry and Keli'i have put together a wonderful set of tracks that embodies and embraces the beauty of Hawai'i. Pop it in, close your eyes, and relax. For many a mainlander, Don Ho will always be the voice of Hawaii, and tunes like "Tiny Bubbles" and "Hawaiian Wedding Song" will forever accompany many a backyard or roooftop tiki party.

Unfortunately, by the time Ho recorded this collection he was a bit past his prime, and he sounds as though he's walking through the process of laying these tracks down. It is grand having these mostly romantic tunes together in one place (especially "Papas Memento," which seems to be The Desiderata recast in Hawaiian Pidgin English!), and the program is ideal for at-home celebrations in need of a bit of exotica. But for more exciting takes on these songs, seek out Ho's 1960s work with his backing group The Aliis.

I was excited to see all the fun music so I got suckered into buying it. What a let down! It breaks my heart because it had so much potential. I wish I could find this collection of songs only well done by the original musicians or even a good cover band.

Christmas on Big Island

I loved The Ventures' guitar style when I was a teen in the 60's (and still do), and have a nostalgic appreciation for "surf" music. I have played this continuously this season, and it has really helped lift me out of the winter blues (along with Martin Denny's stuff, which is another story). Some great arrangements! Highly recommended!
