Not only is he jazz's greatest composer, but Ellington was possibly the greatest of all 20th century composers, rivaling even such legends as Aaron Copland and George Gershwin.
This collection replaces 1988's "Black, Brown, & Beige," a similar 3CD set of his recorded RCA Victor work between 1944 and 1946. Unlike that earlier set, this set compiles everything Ellington recorded in those years for RCA Victor, including a pair of trios and another pair of piano duets with his brilliant collaborator, Billy Strayhorn. Most importantly, this 3CD set has brilliant sound that is astoundingly better than the "Black, Brown, & Beige" set. Rather than using heavy, NoNoise processing, this set uses noise reduction ... Well, I dunno. This CD is generally not so highly rated--two and a half stars on a well-known music review site, but I have four other Kenton CDs that are probably the highest rated of all his recordings, and I like this one as much or more than any.
The Happy Birthday was recorded on Feb 19th 1973 as a surprise for Kenton on his 61st birthday, and the remaining tracks recorded at Fairfield Hall, Croydon four days later--and very well recorded too. The sleeve notes contain some technical data about the tape recorder and the microphone placings.
This 18-piece band plays beautifully producing a relaxed, yet powerful sound. Street of Dreams, as other reviewers have said, is particularly enjoyable, and No Harmful Slide Effects ... Read More:

This is, to my ear, an essential part of the Kenton library. These are recordings that advanced ideas uncommon in jazz at that time and presaged third stream, as coined by Schuller, and initially practiced, in this date and time, by the MJQ and other post-modernists, Kenton included (The Innovations Orchestra). Both composers are featured, with Russo being the more avant-garde; his compositions are complex, interesting, and compelling, avoiding the typical stiffness and, frankly, boredom of most previous attempts to sandwich modern classical music with modern jazz elements. Holman carves a different sculpture, embracing more aspects of the blues, as well as modern harmonics and structure, while not losing the essence of what a big band should be. It's ... Read More:

This is the same band playing the same charts as on the "Birthday In Britain" album. The best thing about it is we get to hear John Park do another version of his great solo work on "Street Of Dreams." That alone is worth the price. John was perhaps the most inovative alto man ever to play with Kenton.
