Either as its own or as part of the elegant boxed set collecting all of the orchestral collaborations between Miles Davis and Gil Evans, "Miles Ahead" finds the ripe Davis crossing into previously unchartered lands for him - playing in front of a large-scale orchestra conducted by Gil Evans. Unlike the other orchestral collaborations, "Miles Ahead" has no specific theme or flavor to it, but it was the first of such albums, and its music stood tall because of its newness and daring approach, hence its name.
In "Miles Ahead," Evans' orchestra serves as a bed of gentle flowers for Davis to walk upon while playing his delicate and meaningful musical statements. The orchestra includes five trumpets, three trombones (and a bass trombone), ... Read More:

Intimate, you are there in sound, and the sound quality and musicianship are unsurpassed. One of my favorite CDs (really two CDs). If you love Ellington, or Jazz, or fine music in general this is a must have imho.
Release Date October 24, 2000
One of my favorites. Peterson's composition and Legrand's direction couldn't be more perfectly matched. Also hands-down great are the orchestra.
Ewald-something would have you believe that followers of syrupy-stuff would like this album. Well, don't. (Maybe he's into rap or garage bands?) I like be-bop (east and west)and classical, and love this album! The work has huge scope - from folksy to heart-breakingly beautiful. Emotion isn't necessarily sappy.
If you go for music that is lush but unpretentious, listen to this!
Never wrote a review before, but I just got annoyed about the bad one. For shame!

As if it were possible to reduce Duke Ellington's two thousand some odd composititions spanning four decades to a "Finest Hour"! The title would make you perhaps think these were great tracks selected from the Duke's whole spectrum of musical output. What it is is a sampler from that small portion of E's output that Verve owns the rights to.
This is really 2 CD's. The first 10 tracks are culled from the complete Brunswick/Vocalion recordings (available en toto on a 3CD set) recorded between 1926 and 1931. This is an "old timey" Duke mid-sized bands remastered from old 78's. If you're not accustomed to listening to jazz from this era, you may be a little put off by the low-fi monaural sound. If you are able to listen through the sonic defects to the music, though, these are some ... Read More:

This is a live recording of a concert at Harper College during the Stan Kenton band's last tour in April, 1978. Almost all of the pieces included here have appeared elsewhere, including "A Little Minor Booze," "Bogota," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life," and "Malaguena." They have also been played better on other recordings. Still, this is a fine band, and the leader, although nearing the very end of his career, makes some nice contributions on piano.
The sound is okay, my biggest complaint being that the trumpets are consistently undermiked. When listening to Kenton, most of his fans want to feel the brass.
Beside nostalgia, the two biggest reasons for buying this CD are two of the selections: "All The Things You Are" ... Read More:
