By now, the story of Ervin Nyiregyhazi has become so legendary, it scarcely needs repeating: a child-prodigy in the level of Mozart and Saint-Saens, a spectacular Carnegie Hall debut in 1920, a career flameout soon thereafter, ten marriages, and decades of poverty before a short lived rediscovery in the 1970s.
Nyiregyhazi's reemergence resulted in several recordings which were published in the 1970sand early 1980s. The recordings contained here include a few items from those albums and some privately recorded items which have circulated among collectors.
Listening to Nyiregyhazi compels attention on several levels. First of all, he could play incredibly loud. Even at full volume, however, the tone is remarkably non ... Read More:

Harnoncourt recorded Bach's Christmas Oratorio with his Concentus musicus Wien once before in about 1973. It's a good recording but there are certainly many better ones recorded using period instruments that have come out since then. This new one is fantastic, though. His instrumentalists are masters now of their period instruments and his somewhat relaxed view of the score has a nice degree of intimacy. I've listened to it four times now and love it. My only complaint is that he's used a female alto where most would use a male counter tenor. I love the recording with Rene Jacobs on Harmonia Mundi because it uses the very fine counter tenor Andreas Scholl but still wouldn't trade this new Harnoncourt for even that as a whole. Highly recommended! ... Read More:

This sampler album was done early in Scholl's career and showcases his voice doing various countertenor standards with the energy and passion of a young singer who was setting the musical world on its ear. This is an affordable compilation for anyone who might be curious as to what a countertenor is and anyone who buys it out of curiosity, as I did years ago, is in for a mind bending experience. Andreas Scholl is to countertenors what Pavarotti in his prime was to tenors; Scholl is unquestionably one of the greatest singers of this era. Highly recommended.

This audio CD is the perfect vehicle to drive anyone crazy about Vivaldi operas. All arias seemed to have been carefully selected across many opera albums from Naive's Vivaldi Edition to entice the listener to hear those works. Magdalena Kozena astounds brilliantly with two arias from Juditha Triumphans "Veni, me sequere fidu" and "Agitata infido flatu". In "Agitata" Kozena perfects two long legatos and tops them with a climatic trill. In "Veni", she hypnotizes with a cadenza evocative of a dove's sinusoidal singing. The Naive label should do well in producing another similar CD now that it has recorded additional Vivaldi Operas to draw from.

This was the second PDQ Bach album I ever heard (after The Intimate PDQ Bach), and I can never decide which is best. At times I can't get The Seasonings or The Unbegun Symphony out of my head. The live audience makes it even better---hearing other people get the jokes makes you feel you're at the show.

I am a musician at heart (read: critical and difficult to please, but very moved by good music) and this is my absolute favorite christmas album. The arrangements are incredible and the performances will blow you away. This is a must have for those who truly appreciate music and even those who just love christmas music (who doesn't?). Even my hubby, who listens to rap and thinks choir music is not cool, looks forward to the Choir's Christmas concert every year.
I'm lucky enough to live in Salt Lake where I can see them perform, and this album contains most of my favorite performances from the past several years. Each song on this album can stand on its own, but my favorites are Joy to the World, What Shall We Give to the Babe in the Manger, Angels From the Realms of Glory, ... Read More:

This is a wonderful CD with a good variety of tunes which were popular in Victorian times. It creates a very nice background mood which is pleasantly reminiscent of an era when life was much more simple, electricity was non-existent and one relied on such things as music boxes and later on the hand-cranked Victrola to provide music in ones' home. The music boxes featured on this CD are actual Victorian instruments and if one has a Victorian style decor (which I do), this is an excellent touch of ambience.
