Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear but there are so many other great composers that existed and these CD's will show you but a PIECE. But, fair warning, these CD's show only a small fraction of the whole movement (song). If you truly dig the genre you're in for a treat, investigate!

I've had this album for over ten years, when I bought it in college. The Cambridge Singers are a remarkable group. I bought the album for the madrigals, but have really enjoyed all the songs at one time or another, though I don't always listen to the album straight through. One song I had never heard before listening to this cd was "To Be Sung Of A Summer Night On The Water I". It is a beautiful, lush piece of music with a bit of a surprise ending.
This album is especially good listening if you aren't in the mood to concentrate on just one type of choral music for an hour. However, I find myself wanting to purchase other Cambridge Singers albums because this is a bit of a "teaser."

...be a second choice? Only because the performance by Concerto Italiano, led by Rinaldo Alessandrini, is 1/1000 of a second most consistent in its beauties. It's also more readily available at a reasonable price. Read my review of that CD for my thoughts about this triumph of Handel's Italian years.
Better yet, get both performances. I have, and I'm not sorry.

I have cherished this recording for a long time, but never reviewed it, perhaps because the previous reviews are excellent. Yet this is the recording through which I discovered the artistry of Ian Bostridge. Artistry really is the word as it is never just the voice as exquisite as it is; it is always also, and crucially, his interpretation. I too was spellbound immediately, I too found the music achingly beautiful, and I too heard a longing reminiscent of love songs. Several years and many Bostridge albums later, it is still one of my favourites. There is an inexplicable intimacy as well as universalism to this music. It is an album to which I find myself returning in all seasons, in all moods, finding it always fresh and mesmerizing.

By now, the story of Ervin Nyiregyhazi has become so legendary, it scarcely needs repeating: a child-prodigy in the level of Mozart and Saint-Saens, a spectacular Carnegie Hall debut in 1920, a career flameout soon thereafter, ten marriages, and decades of poverty before a short lived rediscovery in the 1970s.
Nyiregyhazi's reemergence resulted in several recordings which were published in the 1970sand early 1980s. The recordings contained here include a few items from those albums and some privately recorded items which have circulated among collectors.
Listening to Nyiregyhazi compels attention on several levels. First of all, he could play incredibly loud. Even at full volume, however, the tone is remarkably non-harsh. Nyiregyhazi freely ... Read More:

If you enjoy early opera you will love this. As it stands, it really is just like a Vivaldi opera (for me anyway)--i.e. there is no narrator as in many oratorios, and the arias and choruses all advance the drama. It has absolutely beautiful choruses, and these are a sort of revelation for fans of Vivaldi opera (because his operas don't really have any big complex choruses--if only opera seria conventions had allowed them!! There are a few here in Juditha Triumphans, but the long one that ends Act 1 is especially moving). The other difference from his operas is, of course, that it is in Latin, but the singers still sing very dramatically and act well through the text just as if they were singing Italian. Anyway, the quality of the music is on a par with Orlando Furioso, ... Read More:
