If at times you hanker to hear Handel at his late great best, the robust style of the oratorios, without any sanctimony, this English opera is for you! Musically, it's among the very best of his works, and this performance does it full justice. Battle, Ramey, Aler, and Horne were already established stars of an older generation in 1993, yet their voices could not be more athletic and rich in tone (with the minor exception of Horne's lowest sub-alto notes, which are vague about tuning). Though not "historically-informed" singers per se, Battle, Horne, and Aler wind their ways through the incredible trills and appogiaturas of their parts with the flexibility and agility of later-day Baroque specialists. The musical tracks and the choir are frequently out of sync. Also,there is a bit of intonation about the choir, I believe it is in the male voices. Lots of songs here, but lacking punch. The 3rd CD contains only instrumental tracks for sing-alongs, if you're into that sort of thing.
If you are looking for a great big bunch of songs, the Mormons are always a good bet.

This is a lovely CD. It would be very nice as a lullaby CD. I sometimes put it on when my four-year old is overactive or overstimulated, and it creates a wonderfully soothing atmosphere. When I began playing it during bathtime, the whole experience became less an exuberant bout of high-octane water play and instead a less-frenetic way to wind down for the day -- even with lots of play. Highly recommended.

As other reviewers have noted, it might not be the best *total* performance of Elijah (although it's still VERY good)....but Terfel gives the best Elijah performance that I've ever heard. If you haven't heard this recording, you are definitely missing out.

I was excited to see such a great collection of classics, but I was really disappointed to listen and discover that many tracks are shortened dramatically. A fraction of Rhapsody in Blue- a ridiculously short fragment of Bethoveen Ninth Symphony- "Ode to Joy" a tiny part of the first movement of Rachmoninov's Piano Concerto no.3.

I'd rather have fewer tracks and the complete movements.
