I bought Vivaldi's Masterworks in a 40 cd box a few weeks ago. I am now listening to cd number 21 and I am very happy of this buy!
The musicians and conductors are brilliant.
If i was to live alone for the rest of my life and have the possibility of bringing only 100 cd's with me, those 40 would be my first thought.

I have had the cassette tape for years and have literally worn it out.. it squeaks almost all the way through. Need I say more? OK, I will.
Repetition will make you sick of anything, but this is one album I continue to reach for when I want to relax or just listen to beautiful music.
I will be ordering the CD within the next few days and am glad I found it here on CD... it won't be as hard to wear out and I am looking forward to hearing the enhanced sound of CD vs. tape.

histrionic conductor-with-the-amusing-hair who shook hands with Mickey Mouse in "Fantasia" and was occasionally parodied by Bugs Bunny. Good performances, good fidelity and recordings, good selection but not comprehensive. No Samson & Delilah, no Solomon, no Julius Caesar etc.

The Very Best of Lucia Popp

Lucia Popp came from my home country of Slovakia. In 1963, she took her chance and, as the amazingly talented 24-year-old ingenue, accepted the offer to sing in Vienna. She crossed the iron curtain. This for a long time made her and undesirable element in the Communist Czechoslovakia. Only after the collapse of Soviet block in 1989 she gained the due recognition also in her homeland. Tragically, just four years later she died of cancer, aged only 54...
What she left is the great body of work. She specialized on German and Austrian composers, which is evident also from this great compilation. However, anything she touched, she turned into gold.

One can't help but be impressed with the agility in Bartoli's voice. Vocal fireworks! And yet the "Mentre io godo...", "Caldo sangue" and "Lascia la spina..." are so sweet and calming. I consider this CD a must have!

Once again, Christopher Hogwood and The Academy of Ancient Music have succeeded in taking well-known and not-so-well-known works and showing an entirely new side of them. Remember, the great composers lived in a completely different age, so we can't know their true intentions, but I must say that Pachelbel, Vivaldi, Handel, and Gluck would be quite pleased with this album.
Here's a composer-by-composer breakdown on the disc:
Pachelbel: The CD is aptly named. I must agree with previous reviewers and say that this recording of the Canon is remarkable, keeping the piece's harmonic beauty while making it historically accurate.
Vivaldi: The B-minor concerto is tastefully played, though in some sections it is too staccatoed, in my opinion. The 2-trumpet concerto ... Read More:
