EMI has been releasing a great many ambitious box sets lately, some devoted to specific composers with as many as 30 CDs, but this dwarfs them all, and I'm just talking about volume one, the orchestral collection. Was i glad to see it done? Certainly! Do I heartily wish that a little more care had gone into the planning and execution? Heartily! The idea is a fine one, assembling all of Karajan's official EMI orchestral recordings in one package, and remastering many of them once again. But the execution is amateurish -- the paltry booklet giving the tracklist for each CD has no index, so if you are, say, only interested at a particular moment in hearing Karajan's interpretations of Johann Strauss II or Liszt, or even Bruckner (or any other composer, ... This recording of Salome, made before the Salzburg Festival's assumption of the opera on the stage for their 1978 season, is perhaps the best recording of the masterpiece ever recorded. Herbert von Karajan isthe best Strauss conductor the world has or ever will see, as this recording and his Elektra, Ariadne, Frau Ohne Schatten, and Rosenkavalier has shown us. His complex understanding of Strauss' musical language and his innate sense of his rich, polyphonic lyricism has allowed his conducting of Strauss' music-dramas to bloom in such a way without the intruding loudness and excess energy that afflicts too any other conductors' perceptions of the pieces. No other recording has featured the waltz-like rhythms of Strauss' composition so effectively as Karajan's ... Read More:

I heard excerpts from this recording on a transatlantic flight and had to have the whole thing. I am a great fan of Gheorghiu, and she is in top form on this recording. Why aren't these three one act operas performed more often? That is the question that this recording leaves with you.

I enjoyed this CD because I like the tenors on it very much, and it included a number of selections where the three men are singing together, or cooperatively and that was the best part.

I have recently discovered Purcell's music. While singing in choir as a young college student, I sang, "Sound the Trumpet" which I loved and am anxiously awaiting a recording of that piece I ordered off Amazon. During my search, I came upon this recording written on a completely different theme and took interest, since it was loosely based on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Nights Dream."
The other reviewers have described the format of this semi-opera well and I agree that the music and singers perform fabulously. The only other thing I have to add is that I find music can sometimes be used as a vehicle to relax the mind and even problem solve and I find these works to be that kind of music that isn't too demanding of the listener. You can think, get homework or housework ... Read More:

La Traviata is among my favorites, but initially I thought I'd made a mistake getting this one. The 2nd act reassured me. Cotrubas and Milnes are outstanding together! Their interaction is touching and poignant. She really has a rich, silky voice that was at its best in that act. I like Domingo here -- he's a fine tenor. While I agree that his voice is a little heavy (or mature) for this role, he still conveys that callow youth.

Back in the late 1980s, I watched the Houston Grand Opera's production of John Adams' opera "Nixon in China" on public television. I was blown away, not just by the performances, but by the music, which is absolutely gorgeous.
Unfortunately, we may never get to see that performance again. Why, I'm not sure. It is apparently not available, period.
But the recording is still one of my favorites. I have it on audiocassette from all those years ago. It's on my iPod too.

I don't know how this could be any better. Mario sings like an angel and I love most of the selections. I have thoroughly enoyed listening to my cd's, over and over.
