I'm sure this album won't appeal to everyone but personally I love it. The standout tracks here (for me) are: Meadowlark, Mr. Monotony, Dreamers, Three-Cornered Tune, Away From You & If Love Were All. This album should appeal to lovers of obscure musical theatre songs and to fans of Sarah Brightman. I think this album shows that she is far more versatile a singer than people give her credit for. The reason I have given this a 4 star rating instead of 5 is because the album was recorded on a lower volume so you have to turn it up a bit, but that is a very small quibble about an otherwise great album.

A sublime voice in an outstanding collection. This is a unique collection of Beverly Sills's arias and moving performances. Even if you are not a Beverly Sills fan this CD is a must in any opera lover's collection.

The sound quality is nothing like what we are used to today, even with over-compressed CDs. But the artistry of the musicians is marvelous.

All of the overtures are done very well indeed as we have come to expect with Marriner. The 'William Tell' is absolutely electrifying.

I was very excited to get this stereo Tannhauser, since the ones I owned were the Caissily\Levine and Cluytens(56). I decided to go with this after listening to Soltis Meistersinger(2nd version) and couldnt get over the clarity, hoping for similar revelations. Unfortunetly, this was not the case. It started out well enough with an exceptional Venus sung by Christa Ludwig-definetly the best interpretation I have ever heard but from the outset of Rene Kollo-the famous first song-I began having misgivings about his interp. I found myself feeling this was pretty uninspired throughout, with a brief moment of enjoyment returning in the third act. Overall, this was not even close to the Cluytens version-which is still my favourite despite less than perfect ... Read More:

Even though this is probably the most famous and easiest-to-find "Cenerentola" recording, it was one of the later ones I heard. I'm glad I finally did get around to hearing it, though. Apart from a few flaws, it completely lives up to its great reputation.
Cecilia Bartoli proves why she's the most famous Cenerentola of today. Her rich and warm yet youthful mezzo and effortless coloratura are perfect for the role; she's probably just the kind of singer Rossini had in mind. On the same level are Alessandro Corbelli's rich voiced, exuberant Dandini and Michele Pertusi's magnificent Alidoro. Enzo Dara may be slightly past his vocal prime as Don Magnifico, but his bass is still resonant and agile and he makes the most of the role. As for William Matteuzzi's ... Read More:

To be honest I am not a great Bartok fan but liked his Wooden Prince on Naxos recently and then bought a set of concertos as his concerto for orchestra was my fathers favorite but he had a terrible recordings of it. I then saw this on the shops shelves got it also.
I remember buying him (my father) the Ormandy-Hines-Elias recording (in English) and I think I played it more than he did - it was, and no doubt is very fine (I don't know if its still under the stairs or if I dumped it along with most of the LPs as no one wanted them when he died. With the exception of this I have nearly most all of my LP's in re-releases in digital enhanced sound so...)
This seems just a bit better all round with the exception of the Hungarian which although it sounds ... Read More:
