I think Renee Fleming is incomparable.

In a recent BBC3 "CD Review" broadcast, Alexandra Wilson made a gallant attempt to achieve the impossible task of choosing amongst forty or so recordings of "La Boheme" - and while I agreed with her ultimate choice of the Beecham recording with Bjorling, Merrill and De Los Angeles, I have rather more regard for the discarded Karajan recording simply because Pavarotti's voice, in its prime, as she herself put it, "runs through the recording like a golden seam". The rest of the cast is wonderful, too, although Karajan's love for the score is manifested in a rather deliberately "beautiful" approach and thereby slightly undercuts the drama. Let's not try to analyze every phrase, every note, every sustained pitch. Let's just listen to a tenor who sings from the heart. Pavarotti, he is not--but who is? Domingo he is not--but who is? In fact, who else is Bocelli?
As a tenor fanatic, I try to listen to as many tenors as I can--even some for whom I do not care (see my review on Carlo Bergonzi). There is enjoyment in all of them.
Now, one comment specifically on this recording. I have not been enthusiastic about some of Bocelli's other repertoire. But this entry into operatic arias ranks at the top of his list.

in my opinion, this cd shows the best music of phillip glass, the one he did at the beginig, before the big companies request him to do more comercial music. the minimalism in the best form. without comercial interest. and with the man who most influenced him. a beautifull mix between orient and occident

I'm an early music fan. I also love the work of John Dowland, have lived in Denmark, and visited the castle of King Christian IV where Dowland spent an unhappy time. I resisted having anything to do with this DVD/CD at first, until the PBS presentation that showed Sting at his castle in the U.K. with the amazing lute player. Now I tell all my early-music friends that, yes, the CD is good, but the DVD is better! It's not what we've been used to hearing, but it's an interesting and world-view-expanding experience to see and hear what Sting has done. Now, I'm buying it for all my friends who are Sting fans who would never listen to early music!
