CD-Charts Music : The Best of Kurtis Blow

The Best of Kurtis Blow

CD-Charts > Music > Old School
by: Kurtis Blow

Release Date June 07, 1994
When discussing the pioneers of rap music, Kurtis Blow often isn't mentioned as often as Grandmaster Flash, The Sugarhill Gang, and Run-DMC. This is unfortunate because he truly is one of the forefathers of hip-hop and unlike Grandmaster Flash and the Sugarhill Gang, he was no one trick pony. Although many music fans may only know him for his now classic track "The Breaks", The Best of Kurtis Blow shows that he had much more to offer.

Nearly everything here is great and still sounds fresh today. Unlike much of the rap music back then and even today, Kurtis Blow, at least for most of his career, created his music with live musicians rather than solely relying on sampling and production. Although "The Breaks" is now a hip-hop classic, ... Read More:

Raising Hell

CD-Charts > Music > Old School
by: Run-D.M.C.

Release Date June 01, 1999
2 that person called darkfather and his one star rating of Raising Hell, Huh? Run-DMC vs. 50-Cent or 2-Pac? Don't make me laugh!!! No contest!!! I'll take The Kingz of Rock over 2 Quarters any day!!! They laid the ground work for future hip-hoppers, and unfortunately, other than PE, LL, and NWA, maybe Biggie, there hasn't been many able to truly measure up or carry the torch the way the Adidas Boyz did. Run-D.M.C. and their Raising Hell album is still in my opinion the single greatest reason why there is a rap genre today. Your rating and comments suggest that you are not a real fan and student of true hip-hop and its' humble beginnings.

CD-Charts > Music > Old School
by: LL Cool J

Release Date July 26, 1994
BOTTOM LINE:

There is nothing wrong with this album except that it came out around the same time that BIGGER releases dropped (namely, everything from the West Coast haha ). Too bad, cuz this album has ALL of the rapidfire funk that was in East Coast hiphop. 'Back Seat' is the all-time jeep classic!

Pink Cookies definitely got crushed by buildings; Snoop stepped on them. LOL

Radio

CD-Charts > Music > Old School
by: LL Cool J

Release Date March 28, 1995
A lighthearted teenager with swagger and some bragadoccio sprinkled in steps on the scene and delivers a strong album. LL was 16 years old at the time. Compared to the current young rappers in that age group, not only is his album very complex, but it trumps a lot of the stuff being put out now. This album is a very solid effort, and after listening to what's on the airwaves right now, this album has an effect comparable to when you open up a window to a room with stagnant air. Not only do you feel refreshed, but you regain some of the brain cells that you lost when you turned on todays radio.

All rap fans should do themselves a favor and put this one in their cd players every once in a while. It'll renew your spirits and help you remember why you loved hip ... Read More:

Business as Usual

CD-Charts > Music > Old School
by: EPMD

Release Date September 06, 1994
I was a huge fan of rap videos back in the day because of the infamous Video Jukebox and because of BET. I remebered watching videos one day when I heard the track "You Gots To Chill" from a group called EPMD. I definitely wanted to hear more music from the group because the production and scratching was on point and they displayed nice lyrical chemistry as a group. Weeks later, I saw another video from EPMD entitled "Strictly Business". This track was on point just like "You Gots To Chill" was, so I was anxiously waiting for the cassette to be released. One of my friends heard me talking about music one day and he told me that the cassette had already been released. Strictly Business remained in heavy rotation for a long time. My favorite tracks were "You Gots To Chill", ... Read More:

Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop

CD-Charts > Music > Old School
by: Boogie Down Productions

Release Date June 28, 1989
After two successful albums (Criminal Minded, By All Means Necessary) the Blast Master dropped what would be, number three. This album doesn't get as much recognition, but it's rightfully labeled a classic. As usual, KRS ONE delivers history, facts, and positivety in a remarkable Hip Hop fashion. "The Style You Haven't Done Yet" "Why Is That?" "Jack Of Spades" and "You Must Learn" have gotta be my favorites on here. KRS ONE's creative lyrics, mixed with his unique delivery, combined with his sweet beats (he produced the entire album) makes for a strong timeless classic.

If you're into KRS ONE, especially his BDP years, and don't already own this, do yourself a favor and pick it up. If you're a Hip Hop fan, especially of the Golden Age, you'll dig this one as well.

From South Africa to South Carolina

CD-Charts > Music > Old School
by: Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson

Release Date April 07, 1998
The mid 1970s was an extraordinary period for Gil Scott-Heron, peaking in my assessment with "From South Africa to South Carolina". Having established his reputation as politically aggressive and relevent on his Flying Dutchman recordings and cooled off on "Winter in America", Scott-Heron and musical partner Brian Jackson assembled "The Midnight Band" for "The First Minute of the New Day". The band stayed intact for "From South Africa to South Carolina", and the strength of familiarity shows.

Perhaps the most notable is the ability for the three vocalists-- Scott-Heron, Jackson and Victor Brown, to harmonize together. Two and three part harmonies rise and fall together, with Scott-Heron's baritone, Brown's high tenor, and Jackson somewhere in between blending into a fantastic ... Read More:
