After not being able to remove it from my cd player, The first New Pornographer's album that I listened to, "Twin Cinema," soon became one of my favorite albums of the past ten years. Of course, once I realized how great it was, I ran out and got the band's three other albums, each of which I played a few times and realized that they weren't as good as "Twin Cinema." But precious few albums, in my opinion, reach that level, and, after listening to all of them some more, I realized that each was quite good.
I like "Electric Version" slightly better that "Mass Romantic," -- it's more polished and contains, overall, stronger songs. In fact, other than the Dan Bejar contributions, which I have to admit I don't care for on either ... Read More:

The problem is in the billing.
This is the second time that I have ordered an item and gotton two copies-clearly I am doing somehting wrong. but as a doctor, I am quite capable of doing things correctly-so, what I have come away from this second experience is -don't order from Amazon.
I then ordered a breadmaker and the order went to 'one stop shopping' a (which it was) and utilized a card that I have purposely cancelled with a leter (Amazon Visa?)-again -it is just not worth the time to follow your instructioins and correft it though I have never, to my knowledge, in the last year used that card-and dropped the order.

This is a beautiful work. The Bar Kokhba sextet plays Zorn's music wonderfully. Zorn's compositions on this album are great and interesting. Completely original. Traditional Jewish music meets surf rock meets contemporary jazz. Very cool.

The concept of this CD, produced by Brooks Arthur is a commendable one. He knows lots of folks in show business who are Jewish and decided that newly recorded versions of "Jewish" songs would be great. All but one of the 13 tracks on this (somewhat short at 44-minute length) were recorded in 2006 and 2007 by the artists. The lone "oldie" is "Avinu Malkeinu" by Barbra Streisand, which comes from her 1997 "Higher Ground" album.
The CD starts off great with The Manhattan Transfer performing a great swing version of "Utt Da Say" about a tailor making a dress. It had me tapping my feet immediately. Then Neil Sedaka (who recorded a whole CD of Yiddish songs a few years back) slows it down with "My Yiddishe Momme". Smooth jazz meet traditional ... Read More:

There seems to be no dam on the creative juices of Islands frontman Nick "Diamonds" Thorburn, erstwhile leader of one-and-done indie heroes The Unicorns and artistic freak of nature. While I haven't had the pleasure of diving into Islands' first release, Return To The Sea, I'd be hard pressed to find another album as chock-full of wildly divergent ideas as Arm's Way. And the amazing thing is that most of these crazy sketches actually work out for the best.
Opener "The Arm" starts off softly with a tinge of crashing cymbals here, a gentle guitar melody there, topped off with a slowly building hum, before exploding into one of the most epic guitar riffs I've heard in indie rock this year, complete with arching violins and enough musical shifts ... I had this cassette when I was a teenager and recenlty I couldn't get one of the songs from the CD out of my head so I had to order it. Liked the cassette in the 80s, love the CD 20+ years later.

This album is worth the money for just The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, in my opinion. However, the rest of the album is not to be underestimated. It's a great easy-going album which doesn't have any offensive tunes on it. This is a great background music album to play for a group of friends to sit around and enjoy some good conversation and wine!

From a tragic LC fan- just saw LC live in London and he was awesome- brought the wisdom and power of age to the old and even older lyrics! But this album lacks any sort of spark at all and is inconsistent in style. He CAN still sing as he showed in London- but doesn't even try in this album.
But then to expect continued creativity at 70+ is maybe too much!
Reading poetry in an album just pisses me off. And actually, that was the one moment when he didn't get rapturous applause at the gig- when he recited poetry for a few minutes.
Still I'll get it out now and then probably...it's not awful, not kinda average. His worst I think.
