Oceans Will Rise

I'm relatively new to The Stills and I heard this album before the other two. Since I haven't spun Logic yet, maybe that's why I can genuinely appreciate this album in a vacuum. Well, I am currently listening to WF and I like WF too. But Oceans is much catchier, I can hear hints of bands such as Dredg and even AFI and Funeral For A Friend, which is fine with me. Tim and Dave's voices are both nice, it's hard to tell the difference most of the time.

It reminds me of the situation that Funeral For A Friend went through. They changed their style completely on their current album Tales, and although it's a decent album, compared to their previous work, it's easy to see why it got trashed.

Everyone has a copy of Trinity, as well they should. When I saw that the Junkies were going to re-record it, I was more than a bit apprehensive. My most recent experiences with an artist revisiting their old work, such as Tori Amos's re-working of several songs for her retrospective "Tales of a Librarian", left me cold. So this has been sitting on my shelf for a few months now, waiting for me to listen.

I'm now kicking myself for waiting so long. They didn't just re-record the old tracks, they took a fresh look at them. This fresh look is helped along by bringing in a surprising slate of guest artists: Natalie Merchant, Ryan Adams, and Vic Chesnutt. It works, it works really really well. I am in awe.

Certainly Arcade Fire's church studio didn't work the wonders for Wolf Parade's sophomore album as it did for them, but that doesn't mean the duo don't know how to make good music. At Mount Zoomer is strangely dense; in a way, it avoids the overly-layered approach that come to plague indie rock and alternative rock bands that want to veer further away than what is considered the all-too-obvious quirkiness. Loreena McKennitt sings beautifully and the music is so lovely to listen to. Will certainly buy more of her music. I play the CD almost daily. So glad I took a chance on this CD and purchased it. Well worth it.
