Allison Crowe has the most amazing voice I've heard in almost 40 years of concert-going. Her Tidings versions of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, Joni Mitchell's River, The Beatles' In My Life, as well as renditions of traditional carols, such as Silent Night, are definitive and, simply, beautiful. (It's simple music as in pure. There is virtually no production and very little instrumentation apart from voice and piano on this CD.) Crowe's sound is powerful, yes, but, really, it's also the distinctive texture, timbre and color of her voice that makes for the intense joy in her music. Her piano-playing equally is strong and moving. This album is a modern classic. I'm thankful to discover an artist with such immense talent and taste - especially today! ... Read More:

If you enjoy Native American music, you should purchase this new album, which was the 2008 Grammy Award Winner for Best Native American Music Album. The CD consists of twelve original compositions, each devoted to a different totem animal that also serves as inspiration for the music. The compositions are unique and well-crafted, using Native American flutes, drums, and other instruments. The performances interpret animal spirits that have the power to transform human lives, and are atmospheric and invoke a sense of mystery. Although modern compositions, the pieces sound ancient and authentic, since they make use of a limited array of Native American flutes, percussion, and limited vocals. Only a keyboard and guitar are modern, and they are used ... Read More:

Coming off the surprise success of Sometimes, the debut of Alexisonfire's own Dallas Green, it was no great shock to see the release of City And Colour LIVE. And I am happy to report that, yes, these live versions are...mostly as enjoyable as the studio recordings.
City and Colour LIVE includes most of the songs from Sometimes, plus some tracks that didn't see release. "Forgive Me", "Confessions", and "Sensible Heart" are all previously unreleased tracks, and they are all some of Green's strongest work. These are all ballads with the typical guitar driven melodies familiar to C&C fans.
It is also worth noting that you will find two alternate performances(chiefly the switch to electric). One for "Comin' Home" and another ... Read More:

I purchased the monophonic LP around 1965. A few years ago I downloaded the tracks (also by Blue Note Mosaic) from Galaxy. For anyone wondering about the mastering quality of this CD, it is perfect--as superb as any Japanese CD in fact. There's no fake reverb added, no digital "enhancement" junk--just a true reproduction of the analog audio, which has a kind of "Newport" quality to it.
And it sizzles, as does Maynard's Conn CONNstellation trumpet and his band. Just wait till you hear "Stella by Starlight," an extended performance of a killer arrangement that features many of the band's soloists, including drummer Frankie Dunlop and alto saxophonist Jimmy Ford, who was a part of the early bebop scene but was seldom recorded.

After seeing the touching biopic of her life, I was interested in learning more about Selena. I read books on her, read biographies about her on the internet, saw interviews on YouTube, and, of course, listened to her music. "Dreaming of You" was one of the first albums by Selena that I purchased and I listened to it repeatedly. Did I listen to her music because I felt obligated to because she was killed? Yes and no. I felt such remorse after seeing the movie, but when I listen to her music, I truly enjoy it a whole lot. This chanteuse had a lot of personality in her voice, not to mention, she helped an "A" in Spanish! There are a few ballads, mid-tempos, and even some up-beat numbers here. She was chiefly a Tejano artist, but there are many tinges ... Read More:

I own several CDs of Nakai's work and they are all wonderful, but this one is simply magic. It is a wordless poem to the beauty of the Southwest.

I've always admired Bran Van 3000 for their extremely diverse and varied sound. One really can't classify this group based on any of their releases because they're all over the place with their sound---from straight-up rock, pop, hip-hop, house, techno, rave, simple vocal + acoustic, rap, disco, reggae, ragga, breakbeat, even fringed with some Latin rhythyms?!? So as they run the gamut, they never fail to surprise and dazzle. It's so reassuring that they are back with a 3rd album after a 6 year or so wait... the wonderfully wacky LARGE collective (there are over 30 people credited as being the "MC's" and "Players" on this work!) that they are. The first song, "Call Me (I'll Be Around Medley)," although mellow overall, is the hookiest song on the CD, thanks to ... Read More:
