I've heard these guys compared to a lot of different bands. Younger fans inevitably pull out the somewhat innacurate Modest Mouse or the more agreeable Vampire Weekend comparison. They certainly have similarities with VW in the musical aspect of things, although the lyrics and attitude are much different. Older fans with a bit of perspective tend to liken these fellows to the Violent Femmes(understandable), the Talking Heads(maybe), and yes, the Flaming Lips(huh?). The only thing I hear when listening to Born Ruffians, other than of course Born Ruffians, are Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. I think this album of hers is fantastic. She is comfortable singing dance songs as well as ballads. This is the reason that Unison is my favorite Celine Dion album. Her voice is in fine form. She definitely is one of the premiere singers of all time.

Her album was released in September of 1990 and the album did go double platinum, but unfortunately for her Mariah Carey was getting more media attention and attention from Sony than Celine was getting. I think Celine's English debut can go toe to toe with Mariah's debut.

If you are just now starting to become a Celine Dion fan I think this album is a great start.

I know the soprano Mary Ellen Callahan who sings in the W.W. Chorus with the cantors-- she has a voice straight from heaven, and it comes through in the few solos she has. From the cantors, Mizrachi and Gurney win the prize, but all the cantors have soul-stirring voices. If you are looking for ancient-sounding exotica, however, be aware that most of the arrangements on this CD are 19th century ones and thus may sound a little "churchy." Nevertheless, there is endless beauty on this CD. The only bad thing, in my opinion, is Leonard Nimoy's incredibly annoying interruption of every other song with Rabbi Skolnik's commentary-- that commentary should be in the program notes, not the CD! It's hard to believe I've owned this CD for 17 years! It's one of those things that you put away for a while because you're either sick of it or it gets shuffled to the back of a pile and then you rediscover it and give it some more resurrected play time which it rightly deserves.

This is a unique band with an original sound. They blend strange harmonies to violin, mandolin, keyboard and electric guitar. Dan Roberts sings in a deep bass voice to songs written with witticism and charm. They fit no category except for their own; not country, blue grass, Irish, or R&B. So if you file it under "other," you will still find yourself pulling it out and playing it over the years. It's a great disc!

There's nothing with getting more serious with your music as you age. I mean, you can't always sing about chicks and skateboarding. But, this just doesn't seem to fit Sum 41 and the image they created. It's too quick of a depature. It's like that friend you have who goes to college their freshman year and then come back after a semester "civilized". They criticize your coffee, and are now "above" acting like a kid. Too fast Sum 41, too fast.
