First off let me start by saying that if I could I'd give this album a 4.5 instead of a full 5, but seeing as only two of the songs are responsible for all of my gripes I'm going to go ahead and give this the higher rating.

The biggest problem with this CD is that the group chose one of the more less appealing songs to promote - in this case Looking Glass. Out of all the songs from Walking With Strangers that would have made a better promotional vid or song I would have named almost any other. The music video is almost painfully embarrassing to watch as well, and while the band plays with an interesting concept in it all the artistic direction comes off as terribly cliched and trite. When I drive down the road in my 2006 Honda Accord and have this collection playing on my six changer cd player I feel like it's 1922 in Alabama and I'm in my Ford jalopy listening to some great radio station from the past. These songs not only tell stories of the past they make you feel for people you have never met. It's a great collection.

The other day, I told my disbelieving, hip-hopped-up teenaged son about how Gordon Lightfoot's sweet and beautiful melodies were actually staples of the radio airwaves in the 1970s. Hard to believe, in this age of good-yet-throbbing rap, hiphop and their offshoots that melodies and acoustic guitar music could sell. Having thrown out my scratched LP a long time ago, I have gone a long time without hearing this music. Lightfoot, as we know, re-recorded many of his classics for this wonderful album. His paeans to railroads and industry may seem jarring in this green age, but they represent a truth about our culture: we are an industrialized people that transformed a wilderness (so-called or no) into something more to our liking. This album is an experience and I think it's nothing short of a masterpiece. I didn't care for it at first, but it grew on me the more I became open to it. There are so many different layers of sound and meaning on each track. Listening with earphones heightens ones experience.

I have had these 3 recordings on vinyl for many many years and have always wondered why they were utterly unavailable any more - UNTIL NOW !! I have absolutely everything that Buffy has ever recorded, and have always thrilled to her entire discography. But these 3 recordings are definitely amongst her very best. How anyone could regard them as "weak" is utterly beyond me. They are all wonderful. And all different from each other. It is a crime that it has taken over 30 years for them to come out on CD !!! If you like Buffy at all, buy these immediately. I guarantee that you will love them.
