Drawing equally from the Police, 70's and 80's dance pop, and a little of their own creativeness, the Virgins have managed to create a decent yet slightly generic album. It's the sort of thing that anyone can enjoy as background music, but when the question is what the Virgins are contributing that others haven't, the silence falls. I don't scold them, honestly, I enjoyed it well enough, but when you draw so much from an influence that your song can almost be confused for the influence (on Rich Girls, namely), it gets you down knowing they could have done it better. Entertaining enough, but a bit too much and not enough spunk.

The best metaphors to describe this album is a moire pattern. Moire occurs when two sets of parallel lines intersect, like when you cross two screen doors or videotape a CRT television. The result is a bulging curve that is drawn from the parallel lines. This is Interpol's music. The guitar parts taken individually are pretty simple and repetitive, but they intersect and play off of each other to create bounding moire patterns that are both grounded yet defying gravity. The drum and bass undercurrents are both stiff and lucid at the same time. The amazing thing is that none of it feels cold, clinical, or planned; even though the music itself is cool, it's never cold. The Unforgettable Fire

I was a freshman in college when this album was released. I remember begging my parents to go buy it for me before they came to visit me on campus (in very rural Tennessee - no place to buy new vinyl). In my opinion this album was the culmination of the raw talent in U2 with the production skills of Eno and Lanois, producing U2's best, most creative work throughout their career. Sure, they became mega-stars later on, but never again did they release anything with the creative range this album offers. Eno and Lanois' were able to comprehend the appropriate mood and atmosphere for the topic of the songs and capture it perfectly in the studio, producing an album that stands out amongst many great ones.

This CD from The Pretenders is a step up from The Singles in that it moves from the albums after Get Close and up to Viva el Amor!. You get a bonus cut in "State Of Independence" (not necessarily a plus) and better sound. Nineteen songs in all, from the cool fire of "Brass In Pocket" to their best rocker, "Middle of The Road," the actual bonuses are "Human" (a remix from the "Viva" CD and a shoulda-been hit) and "I'll Stand By You" from Last of the Independents.

What the set should have done was add a cut from Packed!, like the underrated "Sense of Purpose." Or maybe an alternate live song or two from The Isle of View. It would be nice for maybe Rhino to get this out domestically, too. But given the disc at hand, this is the best single CD collection ... Read More:

Black Celebration

This album was released in 1986 and for me it's their second best album. Three songs were released as singles: "A Question of Lust", "A Question of Time", and "Stripped". Those three are definitely highlights but in this case as with every DM album I think there is so much more to their albums than just the singles.
This is the album that has, I believe, the most songs sung by Martin Gore: "Sometimes" is a short memorable piano ballad, then there's "It Doesn't Matter Part II" which is the amazing sequel to the song from the previous album "Some Great Reward" although is musically very different. "World Full Of Nothing" is yet another excellent ballad and finally "A Question Of Lust" is the one they chose for single release.

Better than the sum of its contributors, the 2nd song "California Stars" knocks this one out of the park. A true campfire song for the ages. If this record is a bit uneven due to the stylistic differences between Wilco and Billy Bragg, it is only a temporary feeling that a song shuffling to your taste will fix. Repeated listenings belie the depth of talent stretching from the writer to the musicians. Worth the effort to listen a bunch of times. "Way Over Yonder In A Minor Key" features unique harmony vocals from Natalie Merchant, "Hoodoo Voodoo" is as Wilco as they were. "The Unwelcome Guest" is a nice mix of all of 'em, ending the album on a somber, if powerful, note.

These boys managed to do the whole indie retro thing without much humiliation, but only but only a few years later, the Euro-snootiness masquerading as witty band interplay which embedded this debut with heavy buzz has seemed to wear thin, making the band's limitations seem even more apparent.

Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Halloween

This CD has Halloween music that I have not found elsewhere. As a matter of fact, some of the songs on this CD are now my top favorites!
The best songs on this CD are:
Every Day is Halloween
Dead Man's Party
Pet Semetary
Time Warp (of course.. but you will probably find this on many halloween CDs)

Some of the songs called Halloween were so bad I didn't include them in my playlist for my party.


But all told, the great songs on the CD are GREAT so it is worth it if you want cool music for your party, or if you just love Halloween music!

The Very Best of... Sting & the Police

This was the first album that I purchased that was by Sting and I am so glad that I acted on my hunch to get this cd. I love how he magically melds very creative songwriting lyrics with his very unique voice. There are quite a few good tracks on this album. Some of my favorites are "every little thing she does is magic", "if you love somebody set them free". "if I ever lose my faith in you", "fields of gold", "brand new day" and "desert rose". I grew up listening to his music on the radio and finally decided to buy one of his cd's last year. I also love how confident his voice sounds in the songs. If you like 80's music, classic soft rock and/or pop and you want to hear a mix of 80's and 90's I would definitely recommend this cd.
