Nick Lowe's JESUS OF COOL is one of the great albums of the 70's and one of the best examples of the "pub rock" sound that developed in England as A cousin to punk. Pub rock was more of a throwback to superior musicianship and lyrics that focused more on being clever than confrontational and Lowe captures the joys of the sound perfectly on this recording. Kicking off with the fierce drone of "Music for Money" every song here is a keeper, from "I Love The Sound of Breaking Glass," with it's pretty piano flourishes camouflaging the anarchy in the lyrics to the comic horror of "Marie Provost" and the silent star's final scene.(which involved "her hungry little dachshunds") I usually don't comment on the extras as they are often sheer padding, ... This album has aged extremely well.It sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it 1989. Every track is excellent and and there is no filler. I usually don't listen to whole albums, but this was the exception.I strongly recommend it.It is by far the best Depeche Mode album.

This woman is a poet of growing power, a singer of rare expressiveness, backed by a band that can find its way from a country slide to acid distortion in a few bars. Delicious reverb on some of the tracks, and I cannot resist a quote from one of her many beautifully broken-hearted songs: "I wanna see the ocean bend the edges of the sun..." Gorgeous! I have the 2004 Australasian Tour Version of this Album. Raw language here and there, and rightly so. I'm a guy, but this woman's heart speaks to me. The title song is an amazing piece of lyricism, a bending of grammar and meaning to the purposes of an anguished soul. Her words and rhythms echo in my brain for days after I've listened to her. Whether this lady has the range of genius possessed by Neil Young or Bob Dylan ... Read More:

The best metaphors to describe this album is a moire pattern. Moire occurs when two sets of parallel lines intersect, like when you cross two screen doors or videotape a CRT television. The result is a bulging curve that is drawn from the parallel lines. This is Interpol's music. The guitar parts taken individually are pretty simple and repetitive, but they intersect and play off of each other to create bounding moire patterns that are both grounded yet defying gravity. The drum and bass undercurrents are both stiff and lucid at the same time. The amazing thing is that none of it feels cold, clinical, or planned; even though the music itself is cool, it's never cold. There's still a lively messiness to the parts, like they're overflowing into each other, like they're ... Read More:

Finally, a Fixx collection that has the album versions instead of "live versions" of several hits. I can remember seeing them open for Flock of Seagulls in the summer of 1983. Their videos were all over MTV '83-86.
