While Van Halen were redefining metal with their debut album in 1978, The Cars did something even more improbable the same year -- they invented a new kind of rock: "new wave". This weird album could have stiffed at the cash register, but for some reason it took off. Five nerds from Boston reinvented pop music, and people dug it? So why did it work? You can choose melody or lyrics, and either way you win. Upbeat tunes, catchy arrangement, and instrumentation that we now take for granted (choppy guitars and synths) added up to hummable music. No matter that the lyrics were often dark, cynical and depressed. That just added to things. (When the local metal cover band is bellowing "let's party!", the Cars sophisticated world view seemed more ... Read More:

Since the Cars had created a perfect album with their 1978 self-titled debut, it would be nearly impossible to top it. Instead of laboring long and hard over a follow-up like many '70s bands did after a huge commercial success, the band cranked out their sophomore effort, Candy-O, almost exactly one year later from the first LP. And while the album was not as stellar as its predecessor was, it did contain several classics, resulting in another smash album that solidified the band's standing as one of the most promising new bands of the late '70s. The first single, the Top 20 anthem "Let's Go," proves to be the best track, but plenty of other standouts can be found as well. The title track remains one of the band's best rockers, while the gentle ... Read More:

I own the rest of The Faint's releases, and I don't think this quite stacks up. I agree with the reviewer who said that it is a letdown. It just doesn't have the same whateveritis that grabs you from their other releases. It's not a bad album by any means - still better than a lot of stuff out there - but it just doesn't live up to the expectations set by their previous work.

DM have gone through many distinct phases since their inception at the beginning of the 1980's. This compilation CD, while not "perfect" by the standards of serious fanatics--how could it be?--is a good place to start when you're just trying to get a feel for the band's sound.
Unlike the two singles compilations released in 1998, the tracks here are sequenced to showcase the band's diverse history rather than a chronological progression. "Personal Jesus" was not DM's first single, but it did become their most recognizable hit of all time. It also grandfathered a series of songs that pay homage to it later in the band's career. Try listening to the bluesy guitar riff in "Jesus" and then "I Feel You," "Dream On," "Suffer Well," and "Martyr." ... Read More:

Now and again a musician has a watershed moment in their life where the music they created on paper is envisioned and captured by a producer who knows exactly what is needed to get the best out of each song. After listening to music consistently for 40 years you pick up a thing or to about what a hit album consists of. In that time I have heard some excellent releases across the genres in music. All the best albums had a consistency about them from start to finish. Carolina Liars release Coming to Terms is an album like that. I do not review albums as a rule. I felt I had to with this; it is that good. If this does not end up rating as one of the best new releases ever then the music industry has lost the plot. The only problem for the artist in my opinion is I don't ... Read More:

Arguing about whether the songs/this album is good or bad is meaningless. Everyone is different and like different things. Whether you like or dislike something is unlikely to sway me. So, all I want to say is I really like the album.
I first heard this band from the video game Rock Band and immediately started looking up their work. I've got this one and Impressions so far.
What stands out about them are the vocals, Casablancas doesn't sing the words, he shouts them into the mic making them slightly distorted, and what I really like are the guitar rhythms and riffs, very catching. Like any composition, it really isn't the individual pieces that sound good, it's the combination of all the pieces of the band that make it sound great. Very catchy. ... Read More:

It seems like each and everyday Ben Harper's music continues to grow on me. I have known his music for a decade but didn't really become a fan until a couple of years ago. He is trully one of the most creative artists of his time. He can go from rock, soul, funk, R&B, gospal, and even bluegrass over a course of an album and it never sounds forced or chessy.
Lifeline is a fantastic album. "Into the Colors" is a great first single and the album is packed with great tracks throuhout. If you are a Ben Harper fan then you will not be disappointed with this purchase. This is one of the best albums in the music industry over the past few years.

I enjoyed THE B-52'S self-titled album/cd. The songs have a catchy infectious beat that reminds me of the 60s and hippie/beach music.
For some reason I didn't own this album till now even though my friends had it and I loved the song "Rock Lobster." I guess I couldn't afford it back then in my teen years but I've got it now and it sounds great. It reminds me of the 80s and the fun I used to have as a care free teen. Oh how times have changed.
Anyway, some standouts from THE B-52'S for me are: "Rock Lobster" "Dance This Mess Around" "Lava" and "Planet Claire."
I swear "Planet Claire" sounds like they used a sample from the theme song from the 60s campy tv-show "Batman."
The cd comes along with a booklet with the lyrics and a little ... Read More:
