Music writers in 1977 hailed the appearance of this record as the introduction of a major new songwriting talent. Indeed, EC demonstrates here an astonishingly precocious ability to combine sophistication and popular sensibility with both personal ("Alison") and sociological ("Less than Zero") themes.
Of course the musicianship is considered the primary flaw of the album (it's not worth getting bent out of shape over 'remastering' - I've heard these songs for thirty years and they have always sounded weak and tinny in any format). It's very easy to mock 'Clover''s performance as either lazy or incompetent but in the interest of fair play I would like to propose that they were a victim of the disease of 'mellow', i.e. a perception ... This is such a good package-filled with anything a long time fan would need. With them touring last summer(which I hope they release on DVD)I am hoping that a new CD with all new material is released.

While this isn't "Number of The Beast" or "Powerslave", this is still a solid, better than average release from Iron Maiden. This was the first album that Maiden would incorporate guitar synths into their music. The synths add texture to them and make them more acessible. I'm not going to use the C word (commercial)because the songs are still very progressive and too long to be considered made for radio. Adrian Smith wrote alot of the material on here (Wasted Years, Stranger in A Strange Land, Sea of Madness) and it's obvious his song writing is more pop oriented incorporating sing along choruses and hooks galore. Pretty much after listening to this album it's not hard to see why he would do just one more album with Maiden before leaving the band for ... Read More:

I first listened/saw this DVD about 3 years ago. In those 3 years, it is probably the most oft-watched DVD in my collection music or otherwise. I can't explain in words why it's so captivating to watch, only that it's an experience similar to going to a concert and witnessing something truly special. They are on an emotional rollercoaster and you feel lucky to be able to witnes it. One cannot help but get choked up when Bono tells a story about his father before dedicating Kite to his memory. Yes there is lots of interplay within the band. Bono resting his head on Adam's back while he continues to sing; or 're-living' Out of Control with Bono introducing the band as if it were 30 years prior. Or maybe it's the interaction with the crowd: Bono sings 'Beautiful ... Read More:

This is one of my favorite Iron Maiden albums. The musical qualities are definitely there. The lyrics are insightful as well. Not a bad moment to be had on this disk. Up the Irons!

Their first album will always be dear to me, and I don't think their is a single misstep on it. I would almost say that about this one, except I could do without the slow song and a few chord combinations fall a little flat. That having been said, this one clearly does not rock out with the hooks quite as hard as the previous album. I like this album and can enjoy it just fine, with a few songs that do really rock hard, but overall it is simply not as dynamic. I do not however think their new style is all that different; maybe they added a few embellishments of keyboard or other new instruments, but overal this is the same ole band, just having a classic sophomore slump before they come back strong again.

"Tender prey" pretty much marks the border between Nick Cave's raw, more experimental albums ("From her to eternity", "First born is dead" and "Your funeral, my trial") and more accessable song collections that would follow with "The Good son", "Henry's dream" and further. That doesn't mean that our favorite mad preacher is up for cheap melodies and easy listening.
The opener here is the instant classic "The mercy seat", a haunting, seven minute monologue of a convict strapped in the electric chair. A verbal play about self doubt, conviction and unbearable knowledge of the Old Testaments's rage unfolds. The music is one stunning build-up to the inevitable end.
The three Bad Seeds dvd's which are available now, "The Video's" and the live performances "God is in the house" ... Read More:

I first heard Missing Persons on 91.1 WRVU in Nashville, Tennessee. It was the radio station for Vanderbilt University and the only place in town that you could here New Wave music in the early 80's. I went out and bought the EP cassette immediately. I also remember watching the movie "Lunch Wagon" which featured the group (someone else's review couldn't remember the title). Naked women and Missing Persons. Does it get any better? Singer Dale Bozzio was a former nude model anyway. Mental Hopscotch remains my favorite song.

Dance of Death, Pashendale, Journeyman, on and on, if you have never heard Iron Maiden play Journeyman you are missing one of their best songs, and it's unplugged!
