This album is musical stew. Now, at first glance, my first sentence may make about as much sense as the album's name, which is one of my favorite album titles ever. But the stretch from tracks two through nine pretty much runs together for me. It's like a stew, and well, I enjoy parts of the stew more than others.
First, let's talk about our pre- and post-stew tracks. You've got the charged-up, catchy New Wave rocker "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel" - one of my favorite Talking Heads songs, and certainly the best on the album. The two post-stew songs are quite good as well: the funky cover of "Take Me to the River", a just Top 40 hit for the group; and "The Big Country", a country-New Wave hybrid that mocks rural American values.

This album was released in 1986 and for me it's their second best album. Three songs were released as singles: "A Question of Lust", "A Question of Time", and "Stripped". Those three are definitely highlights but in this case as with every DM album I think there is so much more to their albums than just the singles.
This is the album that has, I believe, the most songs sung by Martin Gore: "Sometimes" is a short memorable piano ballad, then there's "It Doesn't Matter Part II" which is the amazing sequel to the song from the previous album "Some Great Reward" although is musically very different. "World Full Of Nothing" is yet another excellent ballad and finally "A Question Of Lust" is the one they chose for single release.

This is a really good album with artists doing Gram Parsons' work better than he could do it himself. Not that Gram Parsons was a bad performer --but the diversity of talent performing this material is truly outstanding. OK....it's not for the purists but it will appeal to those who really like Gram Parson's music and it is a fitting tribute to an artist who was lost before his full potential was realized.

Don't buy this remastered version because it will make you sick!
I have the original USA 82 release on CD. Yes, it's a 16bit recording, but it sounds 400x better than this remastered version.
The remastered offering is over filtered on the high band, so it sounds like AM radio "low to mid-range sound".
The sound engineer really dropped the ball on this CD.

Teddy Thompsons captures the roots feel of sixties folk country
The first four tracks are excellent especially "I wish It Was Over"
The secret to record sales is airplay and that song was featured on TV as part of a summer concert. The last eight tracks are a little sombre and melancholic, but four out of twelve is better than most albums. This young man has future as a singer songwriter.

Debut album for Talking Heads, they were one of the earliest new wave bands, and one of the most well-loved by the arty and punk in-crowd. It's not much of a surprise then that this didn't sell too well. For one, it's a young band still crystallizing their sound and style. For another, despite the disturbing power of the frantic classic, "Psycho Killer," it was a minor hit at best, and not an easy sell either. Most (including me) only picked this up after their later success.
Like the band, "77" improves as it progresses. Unlike their bigger (and better) albums to come ("Fear of Music," "Remain in Light"), the songs on the second half are superior to the sometimes tepid first side. Byrne and crew almost sound reined in and tentative on songs like "New Feeling" and "Happy Day" before ... Read More:

I had this on vinyl back in the day, but my other DL records were on so much they pretty much eclipsed this one as far as spin time. I just bought it last week again on CD and am really enjoying it. I think it's much better than just a decent debut by an up and coming band, or an interesting look at DL before they hit the sound they would run with. Anyone who heard this at the time it came out would have to have realized this band was going no where but up, up, up.
In fact if this album had gotten the production it deserved DL could have gotten an even earlier launch. As it happened though, hearing just this single debut album made John "Mutt" Lange to realize that DL was a band worth working with. He had produced both Highway to Hell and Back in Black, for AC/DC and had an undeniable ... Read More:

THE FIRST TIME I HEARD [TAKE ON ME] #1 , I KNEW I HAD TO BUT IT.ONE OF THE BIGGEST SONGS OF THE DECADE AND THE TRUE DEFINITION OF A POP SONG.THEN CAME [THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV]#20 WHICH WAS ANOTHER GREAT SONG OF THAT ERA. THESE TWO SONGS ALONE ARE WORTH HAVING THIS ALBUM FOR. IT'S TOO BAD THAT WAS PRETTY MUCH IT FOR THIS GROUP IN THE U.S.A. BUT THEY ARE HUGE OVER SEAS AND HAVE SOME OTHER PRETTY GOOD ALBUMS.

First Impressions of Earth is the sound of a band trying to grow. After the Strokes 2003 release Room on Fire was critically slammed for simply retreading the ground covered by their debut album, the band spent two years focusing on making a record that would sound, well, different. Whether this was necessary or not is debatable; Room on Fire was a perfectly fine sophomore effort by a band that was overly hyped to begin with, and if you're dating Drew Barrymore and being hailed as messiahs of Rock, why change?
The Strokes' attempt to throw some new musical tricks into their tried-and-true style garners them mixed results. Some songs on First Impressions of Earth sound genuinely fresh and interesting, while one can hear in others the almost palpable strain of a band forcing itself to grow.
