Low-Life (2 CD Collector's Edition)

For those fans more into New Order's 80's techno-brit-pop sound, I suppose "Low-Life" might be a favorite. To me though, the band really came into its own with the lusher and more layered sounds of "Republic," "Get Ready," and "Waiting for the Sirens' Call," N.O.'s last three albums. While "Sub-Culture" is certainly one of their dance classics, it really doesn't have the resonance of "Age of Consent" or "Blue Monday." "Love Vigilantes" and "Perfect Kiss" are certainly fun, but hardly stand out. The other tracks (other than "Elegia" and "Sunrise," which are discussed below) hardly make an impression. In general Bernard Sumner's vocals and lyrics on "Low-Life" are sub-par.

The Sun And The Moon Complete [2 CD]

"The moon" versions of every song are simply better. I don't understand what people are talking about when they say the songs sound "forced" on the remixes. Sam Endicott's vocals sound more believable on "the moon" versions...I think the first CD is the one that sounds more "forced". "The Moon" version of "Time Won't Let Me Go" is much better than the original version. And there is no comparison between the original and "The Moon" version of "The Ocean". Unfortunately it seems this version of the CD will slip into the cracks as a gimmick rather than a truly better version of the first. By the way, on the original version of "Bad Sun", the whistling sounds way off key to me...the alternate version is much better.

This is one of U2's best albums. Almost every song is great and 3 were hit singles, including Sunday, Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day and Two Hearts. New Year's Day has become a radio staple classic and is still fresh 20-something years later. I bought this cd for the remastering and I wasn't disappointed, the remastering is excellent. This is my 5th favorite U2 cd in the following order.

2 All That You Can't Leave Behind
3 How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
4 Pop
5 War

I bought the original 3 LP version of Sandinista in late 1980 / early 1981, not long after it came out. I'd never heard anything by the Clash and had only the vaguest idea of what punk was all about, but I'd been reading about how great this group was supposed to be, so I thought I'd check this album out. After all, it barely cost more than a single LP, so I figured that, if nothing else, their hearts must be in the right place.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't know what to make of this when I first listened to it. As I recall, my first reaction was, "This is punk???" I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I love Linda Thompson, Teddy's mother and I love Teddy's parents Richard and Linda Thompson together (sadly, they're divorced and no longer perform together). After hearing Teddy on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack, I fell in love with his voice as well. In his new CD, a collection mostly of cover songs by such Nashville (and Bakersfield) legends as George Jones, Ernest Tubb, Dolly Parton, and Merle Haggard Teddy Thompson excels. He has the perfect voice for these country classics. Who knew something like this would come from a singer from the UK? Last year another favorite of mine, the great Van Morrison did a CD of country classics and although very good, I think Teddy has eclipsed him. Shake It Up

I remember being disapointed with the polish and the silly title track
(it's far better live)but this album I now find far more likeable
I always liked Ocasek's quirkiness and they do stretch with "dream away"
other strong numbers are opener "Since your gone" "Cruiser" "think it over" and the percusiion of "Maybe baby" definitely eighties
and not anywhere near as good as there debut or Candy O
and not as interesting as Panorama
but still as I said better then I remember

New Order , in the throws of casting off the shadow of ian Curtis suicide; desperatly trying to find a voice of their own have created one of the greatest pieces of art in the world. This record stands as the quintesential piece of work from the manchester based band. From the opening "age of consent" to the pop mastery of "the village" to the icy futuristic prophecy known as "blue monday" , they consistantly push the envelope of what could be considered pop music. Bernard Sumners child like whimsical lyrics, Peter Hook's edgy and intensly original bass melodies; and not to mention the near robotic almost perfect timing of stephen morris's drumming make this a listening experience that is rivaled by few others. Dark, painful, angry music here. And lyrics that match the mood, attached to the most brilliant melodies Sting ever strung together on one LP.

Their previous albums only set the table for Synchronicity. Sting, stung with king-sized pain from marital woes, calls on every creative fiber beneath his frown. The result: the Police were never better, cresting their talents in a musical finale that made me grateful, in a way, that they split afterward. I doubt they could have improved on this.
